Tougher case of connected to router, not to Internet

Hi, All

The problem of being able to connect to the router but not to the Internet has been asked and answered many, many times around the web. But I've read scores of such threads and tried everything they suggested, but absolutely nothing helps in this current case, so I'll ask again here.

Problem description: One of my XP/SP3 machines can connect fine to my router, but it cannot reach the Internet.

Problem details: I have 7 computers (most run Windows 7, a few run XP Pro/SP3), and 3 non-computers (Blu-Ray players, etc) connected either wirelessly or via Ethernet to my TP-Link model TL-WR1043ND router. Every device except the single XP computer I'm writing about can connect perfectly to the Internet. From the bad XP machine (which I'll refer to henceforth as BADXP), I can ping to the router as well as to every other computer on my local net, and I can ping from every other computer to BADXP as well. Attempts to ping my DNS server from BADXP always time out, as do any pings to known web IP addresses.

Problem history: BADXP is a seldom-used media computer, used almost exclusively to watch Netflix using Firefox. I booted up on it two days ago, but since it hasn't been booted up in months prior to that, there were lots of Windows Updates to be downloaded and applied. And here's an extremely important note: All the updates downloaded and installed perfectly! In other words, BADXP connected to the Internet just fine!

However, after installing the updates and rebooting, I could no longer connect to the Internet. But I knew what to check, and sure enough, something about the updates reset my adapter's IP v4 settings to the default of getting an IP and DNS address automatically, which is incorrect for my local network. Instead, I've set the TP-Link router to disable DHCP and use fixed IP addresses for all devices instead (and remember that every other device connects fine). So I corrected the IP and DNS settings to the right IPs (and have since double and triple checked them), and tried again. But I've never been able to connect to the Internet ever again from BADXP. Also, the router's reports show nothing at all unusual about the settings for BADXP, and with the exception of the specific IP address assigned, they are exactly the same as every other machine.

Some of the things I've tried that have NOT solved the problem (in no particular order)
  • Reset router and/or cable modem (several times)
  • Checked for malware (several times)
  • Checked for errors in the registry (using Iolo System Mechanic)
  • Checked for any issues in the Device Manager
  • Disabled and then re-enabled the NIC
  • Peformed a "repair" in the adapter's status page
  • Rebooted many times
  • Uninstalled and re-installed the driver for the NIC
  • Swapped cables
  • Swapped positions in switch
  • Tried the following commands: ipconfig /release & ipconfig /flushdns & ipconfig /registerdns & ipconfig /renew
  • A couple sites suggested the commands: netsh winsock reset catalog, but on BADXP it reported that it didn't recognize the "winsock" portion of that command (I don't think it's applicable to XP/SP3)
  • Tried running the free utility 'WinsockXPFix'

Nothing helps, and I'm completely stumped! What do I do now?

Hi,

I would like to see two reports one for the BADPC and another one from a machine that is working. Please.

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.
Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (Only Problems)
Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply.

Did you try to access the internet using more than one browser? Which browser did you used?

It's working again! Hooray!! :yeah:

I have no good explanation for why the following changes worked; it's a puzzle of it's own. But here's what I did:

Out of frustration and almost-random trial and error, I changed my router settings and the IP V4 configuration of the adapter in the problematic computer. I changed the fixed IP address from 192.168.1.106 to 192.168.1.112, but I also changed the DNS settings from 75.75.75.75/75.75.76.76 to using the router's IP as the first DNS address, as follows: 192.168.1.100/75.75.75.75

And after that, I connected to the Internet just fine!

That doesn't make any sense at all to me (but neither did I understand why it wasn't working as it was, of course). I double-checked and triple-checked to ensure that there was no other device trying to use 192.168.1.106. I confirmed this not only in the router's settings, but also using a tool called Advanced IP Scanner.

That being the case, I can't help thinking that changing the DNS address is what fixed the problem, but that doesn't make any sense either! All my other Ethernet connected XP Pro machines have their DNS settings set to 75.75.75.75/75.75.76.76, and they connect to the Internet without problems. The only thing I can think of that is at all different is that the BADXP machine's Ethernet was connected via a power-line adapter (as are three other non-computers which always connected fine). Besides, the problem almost certainly wasn't related to DNS issues since I also couldn't ping to known IP addresses from the web (such as 74.125.225.100 for Google.com).

But there was one more puzzling oddity. Earlier, before I tried uninstalling all the most recent Windows Updates to get it working, I cloned a copy of the system partition that included all the updates already. After the IP changes described in this post, and being able to connect to the Internet again, perhaps foolishly I decided to restore that cloned copy back to the boot system partition. After it booted up, I made the same changes (IP = 192.168.1.112, DNS = 192.168.1.100/75.75.75.75), and rebooted. However, this time it wouldn't connect again!

Frustrated and angry at myself, I played around with the usual set of trial-and-error changes to the XP Network settings, such as disabling and re-enabling the NIC, performing a "repair" (flush DNS cache, etc), and the like. Eventually, it connected to the Internet again! So I immediately created a new restore point, backed up my settings, and created a new cloned backup of the now-working system partition.

Finally, everything is working perfectly again!

Here's the latest report of my working IP and related settings:

Hi,

I'm glad you find the solution.

Didn't had the chance to compare the full logs you posted.

From what you describe it could be a glitch on the Power Adapters connection but I also notice something strange in your logs:

Intel® 82567LF-2 Gigabit Network Connection = Local Area Connection (Connected)
The following command was not found: int ip dump.

Sometimes this error appears but not always if I'm not mistaken, it could be related to windows corruption!
If you have the Windows XP CD you should insert it on the CD drive and from the command prompt type:
sfc /scannow
to check the System Files integrity.
