I'm dense. I'm obligated to close all RUNNING software applications. What buttons do I press to get to a list of RUNNING software applications? How do I close them? How about Systray and desktop icons. Does this make sense? Thanks.

Why do you need to close all running application??

Start>Run.. type in msconfig.. click on startup tab and uncheck everything you don't need running..
