I have always been an Android guy and recently retired my old X2 and got a Galaxy S4. I love it but I have a couple questions about it if I may...

- How do I turn on or edit my e-mail notification ringtone? I can't seem to find that setting in any menu. All my other Droid phones could do this and I'm hoping the S4 can also.

- Speaking of e-mail, since I set up my work e-mail on the S4, it keeps showing my old e-mails as unread. I can go into the inbox, open each e-mail individually so it shows no unread e-mails. But then when I go back into the inbox later on, most of those same old e-mails are showing up as unread again. What can I do about this? It's very annoying.

- My old Android phones all had a function called "Voice Commands" that I liked to use but I don't see that on the S4. Is there something like that only under a different name?

- And finally, I am also wanting to invest in some kind of tablet. I have always thought I wanted an iPad and I found a great deal on a 128GB unit, at Walmart of all places. But since I'm a droid guy, I am wondering if I might be happier with something besides an iPad like a MS Surface 2 or a Galaxy Tab?

Hello brettt777

I am going to try and assist you with the issues and inquiries you've stated, please read below!

Notifications (Default, Email, etc):

Setting Ringtones

ringtone is an audible event notification, such as a sound effect or a snippet of music. You can specify default ringtones for incoming calls and text messages, as well as set person-specific ringtones for anyone with a Contacts record.

Setting the Default Incoming Call Ringtone

Unless overridden by a personal or group ringtone, the default ringtone plays to notify you of an incoming call.

  1. On the Home screen, press the Menu key and tap Settings.

  2. Select the My Device tab, and tap Sound.

    03fig50.jpg
  3. Tap Ringtones.

    03fig51.jpg
  4. The Ringtones dialog box appears, showing a scrolling list containing all built-in, created, and downloaded ringtones. Tap a ringtone to play it. When you’re satisfied with your choice, tap OK.

Setting the Default Notification Ringtone

Unless overridden by a personal or group ringtone, the default notification ringtone plays to signify new email, a text message, a missed call, a waiting voicemail, or an upcoming Calendar event. Unlike call ringtones, notification ringtones are brief and less intrusive.

  1. Perform steps 1–2 from the previous task (“Setting the Default Incoming Call Ringtone”).
  2. On the Sound setting screen, tap Notifications.

  3. The Notifications dialog box appears, showing a scrolling list containing all the notification ringtones. Tap an entry to play it. When you’re satisfied with your choice, tap OK.

Unread Emails: Before I can help you with e-mail issues -- what e-mail domain/organization do you use? Gmail? Microsoft? (Hotmail, Live, etc)

Voice Commands Inquiry: As far as Voice Commands, Samsung Galaxy S Voice would be the closest thing to that, its similiar to iPhone's Siri but not quite as good.

To launch S Voice, just press your mobile device’s Home button twice. Or assign a voice command to wake your phone and launch S Voice.

Choosing between iPad and Tablets:  When choosing what tablet/iPad or devices alike that you may want, there are many factors but an iPad is much different than an Android OS tablet. An Android tablet is more "versatile" in comparison to an iPad. Now a tablet versus other tablets there aren't much differences. Check out the links below:

Okay so I'm seeing that e-mails and texts use the same notification ringtone.... Okay, different than before but I can live with it. I'll try the S voice and see what happens. As for my e-mail domain, it's a domain set up exclusively for the company that I work for called International Jets. "mail.internationaljets.com". I have never had this issue with any of my other android phones or any of my PC's. Only since I started using the S4 a week ago.

Sometimes e-mail systems have a notification feature that is separate and isolated from the phone so that the notification for that e-mail can be differentiated from the default notifications. If you would please check into your email application settings.

Now I know with Gmail -- A bug/glitch that I encounter sometimes is when I read an email and when it shows on the category tabs to the left (unread count number is shown) that its still unread but if I click another tab and go back to original tab that the specific email is in, it often gets "marked as read" (the desired affect).

As for achieving the best results, since the email is unique to your job you may need to get in contact with whoever set up your email and discuss the issue with that person. If you set the email up your self you may still want to talk with your company's IT Professional.

Okay I dug a little deeper in my e-mail account settings and found a notification/ringtone setting for e-mail so I think I'm okay there. But I still can't get these old e-mails to stay "read" and it's really a pain because I can't tell when/if I get any new e-mails. If I go into the inbox and select all of them and say "mark as read", they should stay that way, correct? Why aren't they staying that way? I mean, right this very minute I am in the inbox and have all older e-mails selected and set to "mark as read". The number starts dropping as they are "marked" but then it will stop and start to climb a bit, then drop some more, then climb back up to over 700. What the heck is going on with this thing?

Now I've discovered another issue with this S4. I have certain ringtones set for certain callers; my wife, my daughters, my brother, etc. and they keep resetting to the default ringtone. I had all these ringtones set yesterday (and the day before and the day before) and today I go in and look and they're all the default ringtone... again. This phone is about to get returned to the Verizon store...

Hello brettt777

I understand your frustration but I believe the best advice I can give you is to go to your local Verizon store and talk to a member of their Technical Support team. There isn't much we can do from our end here at GeeksToGo, as this is more of an email application and perhaps phone bug.
