When you tried connecting to the external screen was it also white or completely blank.
Have you tried starting in Safe Mode in case it is a driver issue.

If you do not even see a BIOS splash screen it is the graphics chip itself, if you do get a BIOS splash screen and then it whites out it suggests a driver problem.
Have you tried starting in Safe Mode in case it is a driver issue.
