Father-in-law has an old Pentium D 2.80GHz 3GB RAM PC.  He's running Windows XP right now, but wants to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium.  I believe his old PC meets the system requirements, but I am concerned about how well Windows 7 will run on it.  Also, I believe his older PC means he would have to install the 32-bit version?  So, should he be alright with the upgrade?  Mainly uses his PC for e-mail and light web browsing.

Can you download Speccy and post a speccy profile url?

 

I think that processor might support 64bit, but you are probably better off with 32bit since it might be hard to get compatible 64bit drivers for it.

 

It would work, but there would be some noticeable slowness. You would have to disable aero and make sure nothing gets installed that doesn't need to be. Personally, I wouldn't do it unless the hard drive was replaced with a sold state drive. That would make it seem faster for some things.

 

Does he watch youtube or any other videos online? That is probably where any issues would be.

Thanks for the reply.  He doesn't watch videos online.  He's 86 and just uses e-mail and surfs the webs (Stock Market, news sites).  Here's the Speccy report:

Yeah, I'd upgrade that to Windows 7. It can do 64 bit, but I would just stick to 32 bit to simplify drivers. You wouldn't really get any benefit from 64 bit anyway. If it does end up being a bit sluggish, get an SSD and it will do just fine.
