Before upgrading to Windows 8/8.1 I used Avast free for many years and found it to offer very good protection and to be very light on system resources.

Please note that if you have Windows 8 or 8.1 as your OS, both have an updated and improved version of Windows Defender which offers the same real time protection as Microsoft Security Essentials, as long as Defender is enabled you have perfectly good AV protection.
