I have a x86 WinXP SP3 with video problems.

I recently switched from IE8 to FireFox 29.

When attempting to run movies on NetFlix, the CPU useage slams to 100% or close and everything freezes. .

I do not think that a start-up program is at fault.

Hello vhende2000

Have you tried reverting back to IE8 to see if the problem is resolved - what about trying Chrome as an alternative.

What AV protection do you have running.

Please provide more information about your computer, this includes is it a notebook or desktop, is it a custom build or brand name such as Dell or HP, if it is a brand name provide the model name or series number (not serial) if a custom build post as much hardware information as you can.

I have a Gateway Desktop 5310S with WinXP SP3.

I have Avast Free Antivirus and Spybot S&D.  I run MalwareBytesAntiMalware and SuperAntiSpyware regularly.  I check occassionally with HitMan Pro as a backup.

I have Mozilla FireFox 29, recently replacing my IE8 on advice of anyone and everyone making comments anymore about XP and IE8.  I do not like Google/Chrome so I don't use it.

I can't afford a new computer/software right now so I'm trying to make do with what I do have until I can afford something different.  (I will accept donations).  :-)

This problem with FireFox 29 came as a surprise since I see all kinds of people online remarking that they are successfully running NetFlix on FireFox.

I recently switched from IE8 to FireFox 29.

I have Mozilla FireFox 29, recently replacing my IE8 on advice of anyone and everyone making comments anymore about XP and IE8.

But were you ever able to able to watch movies on Netflix when IE8 was your browser.

I do not like Google/Chrome so I don't use it

Reverting back to IE8 or trying Chrome was suggested to see if the problem is with FF or if the issue lay elsewhere.

This problem with FireFox 29 came as a surprise since I see all kinds of people online remarking that they are successfully running NetFlix on FireFox.

What were their computer specifications though, the specs for the Gateway 5310S show that your computer could potentially be 9+ years old and the specs are so basic that there is no option to fit an AGP or PCI-E video card, this may explain why you cannot watch movies on Netflix, as in not enough Ram and VRam (video memory) computer specs here

Have you installed Silverlight for FF as it is a Netflix requirement;

  1. Select any title to play.
  2. Select Install Now.
  3. Select Save File.
  4. Double-click (or double-tap on touchscreen devices) Silverlight.exe from the Firefox Downloads window.
    • If you have trouble locating the file, check for Silverlight.exe in the Downloads folder by pressing Ctrl + J.

    • Select OK if prompted by the “Open Executable File?” window.
    • Select Run if prompted by the “Open File – Security Warning” window.
  5. Select Install Now.
  6. Select Close.
  7. Close and reopen your browser.

Ok, thanks for responding.  Sorry I did not get back to you sooner.

I was in and out of the hospital for a while and missed your message.

Yeah, my PC is old, but unfortunately I can't do much about that at the moment.

Belarc Adviser tells me that I have 2.0 GB of Ram.  Can I steal any extra 'virtual memory' from my harddrive?

I have about 75GB of available memory out of a 120GB SATA drive.

I do not have a slotted graphics card.  It is part of the Intel D915GAG (J2E1) motherboard.

Graphics:  SyncMaster on Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family.

I do, however, have room to plug in a graphics card if necessary (if available).  Currently I have a wireless network card plugged in, but I no longer need it.

Did I have Netflix running properly in IE8?  The answer is Yes, I was previously watching Netflix just fine, just a little slow loading sometimes but tolerable.

IE8 is still loaded but running only in the background.  It is not available to check Netflix now, and I do not know how to bring it out of retirement, anyway.

I do have Microsoft Silverlight, latest version, installed.

I was not aware, until now, of a Silverlight plug-in for FireFox.

I just assumed that the Silverlight program worked for all browsers. But I can certainly try to install it.

Note that I am new to FireFox.  Not used to all the buttons and menus yet.

Thanks

XP itself is a security risk when you are online but by not using IE8 you are marginally reducing the risk of malware attack, stick with FF if you are able to resolve the Netflix issue and disable IE8 as a priority;

  1. Click the Start button, click Control Panel, then click Add or Remove Programs.

  2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.

  3. Untick the checkbox for Internet Explorer, click Next, then click Finish.

I only kept IE8 when I installed FireFox because IE8 apparently affects the way WinXP menus and screen look and work, according to an online tech site.

I have of course been using that setup since I bought the PC.

They were also the same folks that suggested to run IE8 in the background because of this and then install FireFox as the primary browser.

I have no quarms about uninstalling IE8 permanetly.

Do you know of any add-ons or such for FireFox that I can use with WinXP that closely resembles IE8 and XP together?

Thanks

Hi,

I uninstalled Microsoft Silverlight and a few other small programs related to Internet Explorer 8.

i then reinstalled Silverlight and tried to run a video on Netflix without success, unfortunately.

It still starts and then freezes up after about 5-8 seconds, exactly like it was doing before the reinstall.

I later tried to remove Internet Explorer 8 and got to approx 98% done but then it would go no further.

I was helping direct the wizard to the correct address of various files for copying or removal.

I get stuck whenever I got to the file ieencode.dll.000 on 'Windows NTService Pack Uninstall Directory' for copy or deletion.

This file does not exist on my system.

I located a "fix" online explaining how to locate and save the .dll file onto the Desktop and then pointing the Wizard to it.

However, the Wizard wants only the file with the .000 extention attached.  It will not accept it without the .000 descriptor.   I tried to simply add the .000 to the file, but that doesn't work either.

The .dll.000 file name cannot be located (easily) online, it just refers back to the original .dll file.

However, whenever I try to use just the .dll extention, the Wizard just hangs and refuses to accept the address location.

The wizard does not allow me to back up or go forward by cancelling just that one step and warns that this file is extremely important to a successful reinstall.  The only way out of the Wizard is to cancel out of the install entirely.

I do not know how to work around this situation.  I still have a bunch of other IE7-8 stuff to uninstall yet.

Vernon

For testing purposes can you download Chrome + make it your default browser, remove FF and disable IE8 by following the steps below and then try Netflix;

Before you make changes, you should install a browser other than Internet Explorer, and you must be logged in to your PC as an administrator.

  1. Click the Start button, then click Set Program Access and Defaults18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b_48. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  2. Under Choose a configuration:, click Custom, then under Choose a default Web browser:, select the browser you want to make your default.

  3. To remove all visible entry points for Internet Explorer, untick the Enable access to this program checkbox for Internet Explorer, then click OK.

NB: I have no idea as to your knowledge however I must make reference to the dangers of altering the registry in any way, this is an area for advanced users only due to the potential for the OS to become unbootable due to an important file/dll being accidently deleted.

Hi, again,

I appologize again, I have several overlapping health problems and have been unable to concentrate as much as I want.

To update, I tried to uninstall IE8 but the uninstall failed.  Consequently, I have also not uninstalled IE7 either.

I will install Chrome and make it the primary browser.

I will uninstall Firefox and disable IE8.

I am comfortable making registry changes, before retirement I was a Computer Specialist and Network Administrator for the Government.

I am an adminstrator on my system.  No one else uses the computer except my wife for her emails.

I will get back to you as soon as I have completed the above.

I have medical appointments that will interfere with my time frame.

Thanks for responding.

Vernon

[EDIT]  I installed Google Chrome and started Netflix.  Netflix still freezes after about 10 secs of loading and will go no further, exactly the same as before on Firefox.

No need for any apology Vernon as your health and family must come first

Did you also uninstall the previous version of Silverlight and then install the Chrome version;

  1. Select any title to play.
  2. Select Install Now.
  3. Select Silverlight.exe from the Chrome Downloads bar at the bottom of the browser.
    • If you have trouble locating the file, check for Silverlight.exe in the Downloads folder by pressing Ctrl + J.
  4. Select Run if prompted by the “Open File – Security Warning” window.
  5. Select Install Now.
  6. Select Close.
  7. Close and reopen your browser.

We have been approaching this from a software angle, it may be necessary to start looking at the hardware

Well, this is just getting weirder.

I had not uninstalled Firefox yet, and decided to just install Silverlight after first uninstalling it with Revo.

Besides I'm supposed to be able to run multiple browsers on my machine at the same time.  Just designate one to be primary, right?

So, I first went into Chrome and selected Netflix on address bar and choose movie to watch.

Then whenever notice popped up to install Silverlight I clicked on Install button, then nothing, absolutely nothing happens.  The screen just sits there.

So I click on the install instructions which opens up but I can not see the entire article on the page, it runs off screen.

And I have no down arrow anywhere on the screen to scroll down and read ALL of the instructions.  (love Chrome?)

The only thing I can do is to back up with the arrow on the left of the Chrome page.  It goes back to the select movie spot, I re-click on the movie and start over again.

Same exact thing happens all over.  I get no where.  No Silerlight install.

So, anyway, I break down and think that just maybe Firefox has something to do with it and I uninstall it with Revo.

I go back to chrome and start over again.

Same crap happens.

I give up, what next?

Also,

Well, after doing some other work I had to catch up on on the computer I decided to give it another try on installing the Silverlight plugin for Chrome.

I did the same thing again, selected a movie on Netflix and hit the install button for the plugin.

It took several minutes for it to do anything, but then it actually started downloading Silverlight but only up to the 99% point.

It then took another 4-5 minutes to finally complete the install.

The movie started right up and I ran it for at least 20 minutes with no problems at all.  Real Clean and smooth, no flickers or stalls.  Surprised the heck out of me,

So, I guess we've finally proven that Netflix will run on Chrome after all.  Just took way more time than expected to load completely.  Don't know if that's normal or not.

Now I want to backtrack and try to get Netflix to fly on Firefox.
