The equipment we are renting from the local high speed internet is not sufficient.
I have to call their automated service every 3 days to have them reset the modem.

They are always there and have me back up and running in minutes...but we have had this service for 2 weeks and it is frustrating to keep having to contact them to fix it.

They suggested I purchase my own modem and router...so I am thinking about doing just that.  We are retiring here so this will be our service for the rest of our lives.

I know the Modem has to be approved by Cable One...but I think I can buy any router I want.

Here are my Modem choices (Internet only...we will never have a home phone again)

Internet-only Modems

Motorola SURFboard SB6120

Motorola SURFboard SB6121

Motorola SURFboard SB6141

Motorola SURFboard SB6180

Motorola SURFboard SBG6580 (wireless)

Motorola SURFboard SBG6782 (wireless)*

Zoom 5341

Zoom 5341J

Zoom 5350 (wireless)*

Zoom 5352 (wireless)*

Notes*: While the Zoom 5350/5352 and Motorola SBG6782 will work on the Cable ONE network and will provide wireless internet, Cable ONE cannot provide direct support for the wireless and networking functionality of this modem.

Which one is the best?

Which router is the best?

We have 4 laptops, one special needs son that games online with Playstation, one Ipad Touch, one Ipad Mini and one Ipad.

To be so technically challenged...we have a lot of electronic toys!

THANKS AGAIN

Linda

Hi Linda,

I have CableOne internet as well. I use a Motorola SB6121, and can't say I've ever had an issue with it. It's $63 on Amazon, and supports up to 160Mbps speed. The fastest speed you can currently get from CableOne is 70Mps.

The SB6141 is similar, but supports twice the speed, up to 320Mbps. Currently $81 on Amazon.

The 6120 and 6180 just use chipsets from a different manufacturer, I'd avoid them as they haven't proven as reliable.

I wouldn't buy a modem with a built-in wireless router for the same reason I won't buy a TV with a built-in DVD player. What if you want to upgrade on component and not the other? What if one fails, but not the other? I use a Linksys EA4500 and have found it very fast, and reliable. I actually bought mine refurbished because it was almost half the price, and it's worked fine. Again on Amazon they're currently $53.

I have no experience with Zoom products.
