Long story short: will not boot up after running Hitman Pro—it goes straight to 'recovery center'.

It appears that the c: drive is no longer recognized. After closing the "recovery" window, a message states that "OS not detected on the c: drive. Canoot boot into Windows".
I tried "bootrec /fixmbr" and "chkdsk c: \r", neither seems to have made a difference. I took the liberty of running FRST (see attached TXT file).

 

 

Here is a more detailed description:
I do have the recovery discs and OS installation discs. It would be nice to get the computer back to where it was before the scan, but at this point, I am ready to do a complete restore to factory settings.

No operating system is displayed in the "system recovery options" screen. "Startup repair" reports "MissingBootManager" problem signature. "Restore complete system" leads to "task failed with error -1" or something similar. The only thing I did not try is "wipe and erase data". I am willing to try this, although I figured I'd check to see if you all had another option in mind.

I can't get anywhere from the recovery mode menu. No backups are available. "hardware diagnostics" shows that "no error was detected". Attempting to restore the c: drive displays "system drive is too small or may not exist…", then prompts for the system recovery disc. "Rescue Data" leads to "failed to detect the internal hard disk to rescue."

In the BIOS, the hard drive shows up on the main screen (as 320 GB) and in the boot order (Western Digital 3200bpvt).

Please download  Listparts to a flash drive.

 

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

 

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

 

From an Off position in the computer, enter the System Recovery Options.

 

To enter the System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:

• Restart the computer.

• As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.

• Click on  Repair your computer menu item.

• Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.

• Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.

• Select your user account and click Next.

 

On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:

 

Startup Repair

System Restore

Windows Complete PC Restore

Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool

Command Prompt

 

• Select Command Prompt

• In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.

• The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.

• Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.

• In the command window type e:\ListParts.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\ListParts64.exe)  and press Enter

Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.

• The tool will start to run.

• When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

• Put check mark on List BCD.

• Press Scan button.

• It will make a log (Result.txt) in the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

I am sorry to report that the NTFS partitions in your system has become RAW. There is no way to change RAW partitions to NTFS. All partitions in the drive must be removed and the disk formatted. Contact SONY for the Recovery CD's.

I do have the Sony recovery CDs—which was the only way I could access the system repair menu or command prompt—although I did not get very far with them. Performing a complete restore only led to error messages. If I am understanding you correctly, I will use DBAN (Darik boot and nuke) to completely wipe the hard drive, then attempt to format the drive using the recovery CDs (or perhaps Hirens or UBCD?), then reinstall Windows.

I will let you know how it turns out.

After wiping the hard drive, I deleted the partitions and formatted the drive using a Windows Install CD, then proceeded with the installation. Everything is back up and running, so feel free to close this post.

I still couldn't get anywhere with the Sony recovery discs. Everything loaded up fine (and it gave me access to the command prompt, thank God), but the other options (such as "System Repair", "Restore C Drive", and "Complete PC Restore") still resulted in errors, even after wiping and formatting the drive. I ended up finding an old Windows Vista installation CD from work... although it was for a Dell computer, so hopefully that doesn't come back to haunt me.

I recommend AVAST as an antivirus, and Malwarebytes as an antimalware.
 
Here are some suggestions.

• Always keep your JAVA updated. Older versions will make your computer vulnerable.
• Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft.  To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
• ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.
