Hi! My work PC is having issues with pop-up Aurora ads, desktop icons magically appearing, and other strange stuff. I've tried the usual Ad-Aware, Spybot, and whatever else I could find, but they don't appear to be doing anything useful.

I've surfed, I've read, and have failed at figuring out what to do. I'm not all that computer savvy beyond simply using the machine, but I have come to the conclusion that all of the situations that I read about appear to be unique to each computer and that there isn't one "fix" for any machine.

Rather than bother our Information Systems department with these issues (because I'd like to get it fixed now instead of waiting around for them), I'm hoping to get it worked out on my own. Plus, I'd just like to know what else might be loaded on my PC by them.

I've downloaded some of the programs/software that I see continually mentioned, and have tried to figure out how to get into Safe Mode. For some reason, the login password that I use to get into Windows on normal start-up didn't seem to work on Safe-mode start-up. I'm not sure what that's all about.

Anyway, for starters, I think I figured out how to run that Hijackthis log, and here it is. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:

Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

I can't seem to get into my computer in SAFE mode. This machine is setup to require a CTRL-ALT-DEL when Windows comes up. Once I do that, it prompts me with a password to log in.

In SAFE mode, it goes through the same motions (although the appearance on the screen is larger), but my password does NOT work.

Do you have any idea why not and what I can do?

My computer is a wireless laptop machine. I'm hooked into a network when I'm here, but can probably disable the wireless to get off the network. Would that make a difference?

Well, I think you can try and get off the network so the login screen doesn't come up that you are talking about to get into safe mode, but make sure you still have internet access. Hope you understand.

I could get internet access somewhere else, like the library, but here it's one and the same. If my wireless is turned on, I'm hooked up.

The login that I mentioned isn't for a network, it's just for the computer itself. It doesn't matter where I am.... I have to key in a name and password. The weird thing is that name and password doesn't work when I try to get into SAFE mode.

Is there a way to bypass that? I'd really like to get in there so I can get this machine cleaned up. Thanks!

Are you sure you are going into safe mode? Tapping F8 while your computer is booting up and then select safe mode from the list?....Then you are saying that the login screen comes up, you type in your password and it doesn't log you in? That doesn't seem right if you say you can do that fine when going into normal mode.

Yep, I'm sure. I'm doing exactly that. F8, then selecting safe mode, then it pops up with that login screen again.

Does the possibility exist that some administrator can prevent a user from getting into safe mode?

I'll try again today.

Is it possible to implement the required fixes for the problems without SAFE mode?

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. Your current versions are outdated. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE

Spybot-Search & Destroy

Thanks so much for your help! I really appreciate it. I did notice for the past couple of days those pop-ups have NOT been occuring.

How did it happen that the solutions were able to work out okay without using SAFE mode? I'm glad they did, because I still can't log into this thing in that mode.

As far as the suggestions, I do all ready have Ad-aware and Spybot and used them regularly.

I did not have Spywareblaster, and just installed that today.

Yesterday, I pulled in a huge amount of Windows updates, including that Service Pack 2 and everything else that showed available.
