Problems with my Antivirus software [RESOLVED]

Hi guys, i'm new to these forums, so I apologize if my first post here doesn't give all of the info you need to help me. >_>

I've been using this computer for a little over a year now, and for the longest time I have been running Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition. Now, I will not lie to you. Norton was installed from a copy of Norton that my dad has. I've never really liked that i've been running a pirated Norton (so to speak) for the sheer fact that it feels incomplete. However, it gets the job done.. for the most part.

About five or six months ago I began to feel like Norton wasn't doing it's job completely. For starters, even though I am constantly up-to-date with virus definitions and updates, Norton is always telling me that none of the things it has found can be deleted or fixed yet, so they're stuck in the quarantine, and though i'm safe with them quarantined, I still dislike having them on my system. So I broke down and installed AVG Antivirus. AVG quickly found items that apparently Norton had missed. Ever since then, i've been running both Norton Corporate and AVG Free together, thinking it couldn't hurt to have the added protection.

Both programs have viruses in thier quarantines/vaults.

Lately i've been having problems with AVG popping up and telling me it has detected a virus, but I can't do anything about it. Whenever I click "Heal" "Delete File" or "Move to Vault" it tells me the action is unavailable. I'm forced to just "Continue" I have come to the conclusion that AVG is just detecting viruses in Norton's quarantine.

Just recently I read on these very forums that it's bad to run more than one AntiVirus program, and I can see why.

Anyway! That leads me to my delimma. I want to safely remove just one of these antivirus programs, leaving me with the best one you guys would recommend. My worries are uninstalling one of the programs, opening up the quarantine.

Which program should I uninstall, what's the safest way to go about doing it, and will there be any problems afterwards?

Welcome to GTG.

You definitely have spyware there.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

PSD Tools
AceGain
SuperBar

Messenger Plus - this program contains a 'sponsor' program. If you installed this 'sponsor' program, please uninstall Messenger Plus and reinstall it back but without the sponsor. In this case, you DID install the sponsor also.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

To answer your question, you may remove/uninstall them as they are. After you are done, just delete the whole folder in the Program Files folder for that program. That should get rid of the Quarantined files also. I recommend using AVG over Norton any day. :tazz:

Thanks for the help! I did as you said, and here is my new Log:

(Edit) I noticed after posting this updated log that there are a few things listed that you told me to delete, still there. But the thing is, while I was deleting the items, I didn't see them in particular (though I did end up deleting about 17 items that you listed)

OK, try doing this in Normal Mode then since Safe Mode might have cut some of those entries out:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Make sure to close any open browsers.

Your log is clean.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Make sure to get the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer at http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
