recently got this computer from my boss when they upgraded to a new PC, curious what windows and linux would run the best on it.

going to use it probably for a media server, streaming movies and music and what have you over my home network. thanks

Hi BranFace,

 

Well if there is a way to upgrade RAM on this machine,512MB is low for say Windows 7, need at least 1GB RAM.

 

I ran Windows 7 Home Premium on a Pentium 4, but with more RAM. Which also you will not have luck doing the other things you listed.

 

Windows XP not to safe anymore over the internet, no support for it. Vista be about same as Windows 7. Not sure about Linux though.

Might try a lightweight linux distro such as Lubuntu, or in the extreme, SliTaz.  There's still life left in that though, I'd say.

Linux is superior to Windows in just about every way.

If you have less than 1 GB of RAM, then Windows 7 isn't even an option for you.  Try Lubuntu, as the poster above me suggested.
