Hello,

Can anyone tell me if there is a virus on the iMac that involves an ant crawling around on the screen?

I can't figure out if this is a real ant or a ant virus that has attacked my computer.

It is not on the glass screen.  I have tried touching it and it does nothing because it is under the glass.

I have scrolled over it, clicked it and tried to highlight it all to no avail.

Any virus out there I should be aware of?  Scared to do anything on this computer now as I use this as my SECURE computer vs. my Dell which was infected earlier this year.

Help!  Really appreciate it!

Thanks!

Dianne

Usually Macs do not get infected with viruses because most of the people writing the viruses are focused on Windows machines. The ant on your screen might be a real one and might not be a real one. It seems possible that a real one might get in there. Take a flashlight and shine it on it and see if you see a shadow. Also I have known of a program prank that does exactly what you are talking about, so in case you have some techy friends or someone who found that prank, perhaps you have been pranked :)

Billy,

That is what I thought.  That is why I use my Mac for anything/everything secure that I do.  The Dell was a disaster.

It is extremely unnerving to see a little ant crawling behind the glass.

Program prank?  You mean as in Ant Program Prank?

I don't have any friends that are smart enough to play a prank on my computer.  lol!

Thanks for your thoughts.

I have been working with Mac's for a long time, and this does not sound like a malware infection. And as stated above Apple computers don't really get infected with malware although there have been some exceptions in the last couple of years. You probably need to use some Raid. :)

If you can see the ant with the iMac turned off using as suggested a strong light such as a flashlight, then it most definitely is a real ant. Apart from completely dismantling the thing to remove the ant, you could try placing a sugary sweet near to the iMac over night with the hope it might attract the ant out.

The ant just showed up on my screen. I rebooted and it returned. I closed all programs and turned off iMac and then waited before turning on again. The ant reappeared when I opened mail program. Then my mouse got stuck swirling . I forced quit mail and am now on my iPad. Feels like someone got into my mail....
Suggestions?????
