The smart hard disk check has detected an imminent failure.To ensure no data loss,please backup

the content immediately and run hard disk test in system diagnostics.

hard disk 1(301)

enter continue to startup

I was told i need a new hard drive i am wondering do i need to re install an operating system as well or when i replace the hard drive will my laptop work normally?

if i do have to re install a new operating system does it have to be the same one that was originally on my laptop thanks

:welcome:     newfychic

You will need a new HDD by the sound of it but we can help you test the drive to be sure.

Have you been able to back up your data from the HDD,

Can you tell us the brand and model name or number of the notebook so that we can do some research.

We will come back to the OS when we have more info.

HP does not state what brand of HDD is used in the notebook so please try the one provided by Seagate as it works well with other brands of HDD, details below;

Run the HDDs diagnostics tool;

Make sure you select the tool that is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive (Use  SeaTools for Windows v1.2.0.6 (10.15.2011 if unsure of brand) http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Depending on the program it'll create a bootable floppy or a bootable DVD/CD.
If the downloaded file is the .iso type use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn the .iso file to a DVD/CD disk depending on your OS (select "Write image file to disc" option) and make the disk bootable.

RE ImgBurn: please use the custom install and uncheck the attached foistware such as "Install Entrusted Toolbar etc

Apologies for my absence, unfortunately work has kept me away from the forums  xsad.png.pagespeed.ic.5zxzyGiJz0.png

Sorry that your update is not better news, you have said that there is no data on the drive that you need but can I ask if you need help with replacing the HDD and reinstalling the OS and drivers etc.
