Gday.

Remove the dying HDD from the computer.   Remove the backup drive from the external caddy and install the dying drive.

Boot to the Desktop then plug in the caddy.   Hopefully it will be detected as a USB device and given a drive letter.   See if it is accessible in Windows Explorer.

Connect the old drive > power up, > Start tapping the F8 or F11 key to bring up the once only boot menu.

Determine which HDD holds your new installation, > select it and press enter.

At the desktop, go, start, > click Run.

In the Run box, copy and paste, diskmgmt.msc then press enter.

Please take a screenshot of the window that opens and upload to your next reply.

Yes, Run from your new hard drive and selecting it the way instructed as, so far, other methods with both drives connected have failed.

I want to see if selecting the new drive will get a successful boot.

If you are asking me to boot the new hard drive WITH the broken one also plugged in, while being run as a slave, it will not boot.

A Chkdsk repair starts, and it says press any button to bypass it

I do this, it says "Skipping chdksk" and it locks up infinitely.

If I let the dskrepair go on, It takes 48+ hours to  fully complete and then it seems to stop. Then the computer goes into a self power save mode, and ultimately the screen is black and won't go further.

OK, if no Boot using instruction from reply #21 then try using instruction from reply #18.   If you can see it as a attached USB device in Windows Explorer, copy your Data to the new HDD.
