We'll make you a run a scan overnight. As this is a Netbook, please keep it plugged in to the charger so it doesn't turn off during the scan. I recommend you to leave that scan running overnight since it can be a pretty lenghty one. Open an elevated command prompt (like you did for the SFC scan) and enter this command:

chkdsk /r

From there, accept to schedule the scan for the next restart (Enter y then press on Enter) and restart your computer, the scan will be launched automatically. Please do not interrupt it for any reason there is as you could damage your HDD badly.

I ran chkdsk / r. There was no change in the speed of the netbook.   Several times I did notice that there were some messages that indicated that a segment could not be read.

I am not sure that it will help you but I have noticed (1) I cannot create a system restore point; and (2) when I try to open the C: drive in Explorer, the computer locks up (it continues showing the spinning circle indicating that it is trying to respond, but never does nor let me do anything.  I have to turn it off by holding the power button down.)

Also I noticed that the sfc scannow report indicates that there are a number of corrupt drivers. The last time this computer had major problems it was fixed by replacing corrupt and missing drivers.

Sorry for the late reply, it's Christmas Days and I had some parties to attend :P
What happens when you try to create a System Restore Point? Do you get an error message? If so, which one exactly?

No apology needed.  I wasn't really expecting a reply yesterday.

I tried again today since I couldn't remember whether or not I got an error message when I tried previously. This time it worked.  Previously I believe that it said the restore point was successfully created but when I looked at the list of restore points it said something like "no restore points have been created". This time the list showed the restore point I created and one created when windows updated earlier today.

Alright, at least we know the System Restore works which is good. If you configure a "clean boot", and restart your computer, is it faster than normal?

I restarted with a "clean boot". Not much if any faster than before.

You could always get checked for malware here on GeeksToGo, see if you're infected with something that slows you down. Or maybe it is time for a clean reinstall as there's too much junk on your system. Personally, I would start with the check-up, since it'll allow the helpers there to see things I can't see right now with the scans I make you run.

I will start the malware removal process. I hope it works, because the netbook does not have a CD/DVD drive and does not come with a disk with which to do a clean reinstall.

I sincerely thank you for your efforts to help me.
