I am running XP as it always seems to be reliable.  However, can somebody please tell me what should be enabled on the msconfig file to minimise start time.

I anxiously await comments,

Hello, Here is a quick guide  that you can use to speed up your computer a bit.

Step 1: Run Temporary File Cleaner

  • Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop.
  • Close any open windows
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program. (Vista/7/8 Users, Right Click and select Run as Admin)
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run
  • Click the Start button to begin the process
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine, if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean.

Step 2: Defrag your computer with Smart Defrag.

Download Smart Defrag

Select all disk to be defragged then hit the Analyze now button.

Once the Analyze is complete hit the Defrag now button.

Step 3: Disable startup programs with Ccleaner.

Go ahead and install Ccleaner.

Do not use the registry cleaner function.

Now that you have the program installed go ahead and run the cleaner function.

Now that you have cleaned out some temp files, lets go ahead and disable all of the items starting up with your machine except your antivirus.

To do this you will need to click on tools then start up select each item then disable.

Lets set Ccleaner to run when your machine boots, so that you will never have to worry about cleaning temp files again.

To do this:

  • Hit options.
  • Settings.
  • Place a tick to run Ccleaner when the computer starts.
  • Now go to the advanced tab, and select close program after cleaning, now run the cleaner again this will close Ccleaner.
  •

Step 4: Remove Primary IDE drivers and reboot.

  • Hit the Start button then.
  • Right Click My computer
  • Properties
  • Harwdare Tab
  • Device Manager.
  • Scroll down to the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controlers Left click the + to the left of the drivers.
  • Right Click and uninstall all of your Primary IDE drivers.
  • There most likely will be more than one of the Primary IDE Drivers!!
  • Make sure and un-install All of them prior to rebooting.
  • Make sure that you only remove the Primary IDE Drivers nothing else
  • Reboot the machine.
  • Another request will be made to reboot after the initial.
  • Reboot again.
