startsearches.net [RESOLVED]

Hi,

My browser homepage always goes to www.startsearches.net even if I change it in my internet options.

There is also a pop-up message saying the following:

Your PC is infected with spyware.

Browser version: 4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)
Spyware details: "stealthSWs114.h!dll" ver.4.442as18a.
access port:#33299

I have read many similar posts on this topic and tried those solutions but my HJT log does not contain the things that other people have been told to delete.

I cannot download Cleanup but I have run the following programs:
Ad-aware
CWShredder
Trend Housecall
Windows SP2 (already had it)
HJT
Microsoft Antispyware
smitfraud.reg
Killbox
Norton Internet Security and Antivirus

Before doing these, my registry keys were completely infected with startsearches.net but now they seem to be gone, but my homepage is still infected as before. That website also comes up when I'm trying to access other websites, e.g. Hotmail etc.

Hi Excal,

Thanks for your reply. I'm still having the same problems as before, except my homepage under internet options now says www.google.com yet each time i load IE, it still goes to startsearches.net, and it often does that when i try to visit other websites. :tazz:

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.

Right click on the Microsoft/Giant AntiSpyware icon (looks like a target) and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) and click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Download and install CleanUp! Here
We will use this program later.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp966.tmp

7. click the Fix Checked box

8. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp966.tmp

9. Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

10. Run the program CleanUp!

11. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

12. Please post an Active scan log, About:Buster log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

Hi Excal,

Sorry for the delayed reply, I've been having exams one after another.

I downloaded aboutbuster but when I tried to run it, it came out with an error saying "run-time error 5, invalid procedure call or argument"

Other things worked very well ;)

Computer is looking good - homepage back to normal and no more signs of startsearches after I did a "browser hijack restore" in Microsoft Antispyware, however I don't know if the root of the problem is solved yet.

Active scan came up with 6 viruses. Here's the log:

Hi Joy.

THis should do it ;)
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hhk.dll
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "no".

    Do that for the following files also, until you get to the last one, then click "yes" when HJT asks you to reboot.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\oleadm.dll

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Spybot S&D


If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast


The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4

Spywareguard

IE/Spyad


A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:

Sygate

Kerio

ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox

Opera

This site is a great source for tightening up security on Internet Explorer settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot
