Hi,

 

I've a folder which won't delete. That is, I've deleted it, but it still appears in Explorer as if it's NOT been deleted. When I click delete, I get a pop-up which reads "Could not find this item.  This is no longer located in C:\name of folder. Verify the item's location and try again."

 

I had this once before, and I believe I found/fixed the error by going into the registry...but I cannot find that solution any longer. I've tried numerous other solutions seen around the Internet -- none of which worked. I even tried tricking the computer by re-creating the steps to create the folder and files that were in it, and then deleting those...that didn't work.

 

Thoughts?

1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check. C:

2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.

3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,

4. Check both boxes and then click Start.

You will receive the following message:

The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?

Click Yes to schedule the disk check, but don't restart yet.

 

Start, Run, eventvwr.msc, OK to bring up the Event Viewer.  Right click on System and Clear All Events, No (we don't want to save the old log), OK. Repeat for Application. 

 

Reboot. 

 

The disk check will run and will probably take an hour or more to finish.

and save it to your Desktop:

2. Double-click VEW.exe

3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'

Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box

Then click the Run button.

Notepad will open with the output log.

 

 

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.

Right click on (My) Computer and select Manage (Continue) Then the Event Viewer. Next select Windows Logs.  Right click on System and Clear Log, Clear. Repeat for Application. Reboot. The disk check will run and will probably take an hour or more to finish.

 

 

Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator.  Then type (with an Enter after each line).

 

sfc /scannow

 

(SPACE after sfc.  This will check your critical system files. Does this finish without complaint?  IF it says it couldn't fix everything then:

 

Copy the next two lines:

 

findstr  /c:"[SR]"  \windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log  >  \windows\logs\cbs\junk.txt 

notepad \windows\logs\cbs\junk.txt 

 

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator, Continue.  Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied line should appear.

Hit Enter if notepad does not open.  Copy and paste the text from notepad into a reply.  Close nOtepad.  Close the Command Window.

I finally got to this, but I encountered a problem. You wrote:

There is nothing which simply reads "Windows." So did you mean everything which includes Windows? (API Tracing, Powershell, Application Server, Biometrics, etc.) Or Just one of those?

 

Also, please let me know if I need to start from the beginning or if I can pick up from this step. Thx!

Make sure you RIGHT click on Computer.  You should get a menu that has Manage as an option.  Left click on that.  Then you should see Event Viewer among other things. Left  Click on the arrow in front of Event Viewer.  Then you should see Windows Logs.  Left click on the arrow in front of Windows Log and it should look like this:

 

 

If you still can't find it then just go on with the reboot and continue.

Just a quick update:

Yeah, this was the step that was missing that got me lost: Left click on that.

So thanks for adding it.

 

Did all the steps, but when I restarted the disk check didn't happen. This is likely b/c I ran some other diagnostics for another issue, and one of them must've cancelled it out. So I have to restart at a time when I'm not about to do some work. Hopefully in the next day or two.

Get the free version of Speccy:

Latest Version button  - Do NOT press the large Start Download button on the upper left!)  Download, Save and Install it.  

 

Close all browsers and open progrms before running Speccy.  Run Speccy.  When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving), File, Save as Text File,  (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK.  Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System.  (It will be near the top about 10 lines down.)  Save the file and close notepad  Attach the file to your next post as it is usually too large for the forum (Click on More Reply Options then Choose file, select the file, Open, Attach this File) Uninstall Speccy.

 

 

Get Process Explorer

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7 - right click and Run As Administrator).  

 

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK

Options, Verify Image Signatures

 

 

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.  

 

Wait a full minute then:

 

File, Save As, Save.  Open the file Procexp.txt on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Uninstall Windows Live Essentials.  Perhaps there is a newer version if it's something you really use but most people just get it foisted on them by (optional)  Windows Updates.

I just used Speccy and Process Explorer for another issue (http://www.geekstogo...view=getnewpost). The files are attached.

Speccy: I pulled out my serial number, IP address & Mac address

Process Explorer: it suggested the Save name as "Acrotray" -- the Adobe thing. Not sure why it did that.

 

This issue/the folder has been there for about 6 mos. The other issue is linked above is much newer.

 

Can you recommend a good MP3 player? It looks like WinAMP may've had a lot of improvements since last I tried (and got annoyed with) it:

As I post this, I am in the process of removing Windows Live (I guess they make it take a long time so that you change your mind). Thx. I had turned off Windows updates for a while...but then some update last year actually fixed an issue I was having w/my PC. So they hooked me. =\

 

I removed QMP.

 

The problem folder will still not delete.

 

Is there something in the registry I can do? Last time I had this issue...it was resolved via the registry. But I don't recall where I got that info.

That's me on the other thread too.  No wonder the Speccy log looked familiar.

 

Usually the error you report when you try to remove a file or folder is caused by the hard drive and the check disk routine will fix it.  Your Speccy report shows the hard drive is failing so it's possible that the check disk isn't enough to do the job.  Sometimes the maker's extended disk check will help but Toshiba doesn't seem to offer a disk check program any more.   

 

 

 What is the full name and path of the folder you are trying to delete?
