Hi JWalsh,

You do have a few items you can take out of start up, it could help that bootup time ;)

Note: remember, by "fixing" fixing these items in HiJackThis, you are not deleteing them. You are merely taking them out of your startup. ;) (we can change it back to the way it was if your not happy with the outcome, let me know)

Open HiJack and do a scan.

Put a Check next to the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.EXE" /background
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DellSupport] "C:\Program Files\Dell Support\DSAgnt.exe" /startup
O4 - Global Startup: America Online 9.0 Tray Icon.lnk = C:\Program Files\America Online 9.0\aoltray.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Event Planner Reminders.lnk = C:\Program Files\Sierra\Planner\PLNRnote.exe

click the Fix Checked box

Reboot

Let me know how that is.

Hi Excal & Kristy,

I had a great deal of trouble getting my computer to log on tonight. It was even very slow logging on in safe mode. I have been running the Gegistry cleaner program. I have deleted everything found, although most of the entries found say they are for filepaths not found.

I have posted another HiJackThis log.

Thanks for your continuing help. Sorry this is such a problem.

hmmmm, interesting. Can not find anything on your log.

Lets see if we can find something hiding.
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
  • Click on the button "Generate StartupList log"
  • Copy and past the StartupList from the notebook onto your post
Download rkfiles http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip and unzip the contents to a new folder on your desktop.

REBOOT TO SAFE MODE. These tools MUST be run in safe mode!

Once in safe mode, double click rkfiles.bat file to run it. It will scan for a while, so please be patient. Wait until the DOS window closes. It will produce this C:\log.txt, post that in your next reply along with the startuplis.

Thanks,

:tazz:

Hi Excal & Kristy,

Sorry I have not posted in a while.

After my last post, I uninstalled a Windows Servicepack that I had recently installed. My computer has been runnning well since I did that.

Your help throughout this ordeal has been excellent!

It was our pleasure ;)

Glad things worked out for you.

Here some things that might help you out.

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE

Spybot S&D

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4

Spywareguard

IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:

Sygate

Kerio

ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox

Opera

This site is a great source for tightening up security on Internet Explorer settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.
