First of all, I would like to express my appreciation for the initial protocol you describe--it eliminated 60+ adware from my machine!!!

I went through the entire procedure:
Cleanup, ad-aware, CWShredder, Spybot (+immunization), Ewido, Trend housecall, TDS-3 (not sure it did what it was supposed) to.

I have not installed SP2, as I'm still having trouble with SurfSideKick 3 and something entitled uzzhys. Both are attempting to to add themselves as auto-startups to my system, continually being detected by spybot and Winpatrol. There is a folder on my C drive for SurfSideKick 3, but I have been hesitant to attempt removal. Both appear on the WinPatrol list of running programs, but selecting "remove" in that application does not remove them.

Lastly, I have the Invalid Backweb application "1940576" dialog box appearing when I reboot.

First of all, it is good that you didnt install SP2 as it could have resulted in more problems for you. We will install it after the P is completely disinfected.

Please print out these instructions or copy them into a text file on your Desktop for easy access.

During the fix, u will be asked to fix some entries, delete some files or uninstall sosme programs. If in case, you do not see those entries / files / programs, please make a note of it. Continue with the fix and in your next post please inform me of all deviations from the fix prescribed.

1. Download Programs

Please download these programs and save them in a new folder on your desktop -

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Ewido Security Suite
CWShredder

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Install Ewido, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Restart the PC in Safe Mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when the PC is starting up).

2. Remove Infections

Run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.
Run Ewido full scan. Let it fix any items it finds.

3. Run Hijack This

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

5. Delete Rogue files

Open Windows explorer (right click on start and then click on explore). Locate and delete the following files, if found -

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

C:\WINDOWS\System32\uzzhys.exe
Sskknwrd.dll
Ssk.log
SskUpdater.exe

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.

Click the Install button to extract the files from l2mfix downloaded earlier and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Save the log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!


Run Hijack This and post a fresh HJT log along with Ewido scan report and the log of l2mfix.

Did it all, thanks. Referring to the numbering system in your last post:

1&2. Uninstalled prior ewido, updated CWShred, reinstalled ewido and reran both ewido and CWShred. Neither identified anything. NOTE: I did not see the option to record an ewido log while I was doing this, so as you can tell, no ewido log is attached. sorry.

3. Did it

4. Add or Remove programs: SSK was not there. Removed Viewpoint Manager (NOTE: Viewpoint Media Player was present, but I did not remove it).

5. Using windows explorer, under Program files:
SSK was not present.
Deleted the SSK 3 FOLDER (you said delete files, but I assume you meant folder and all its contents)
Viewpoint was deleted.

C\windows\syst32\uzzhys was not present. Searching my harddrive produced no such file
sskknwrd.dll was also not present. Searching my harddrive located many zipped copies of this and related files in the quarantine folder for my Yahoo spy (C:\program files\Yahoo!\YPSR\quarantine\some number.zip). I deleted all of them.
ssk.log and sskupdater.exe were not found.

After reboot, No backweb dialogue box!!!!
No SSK, uzzhys messages (so far)!!!!

Now, WinPatrol and Skybot have repeatedly (every few seconds) have been detecting an attempted change in my IE search page, with the following dialogue box:
"New page is [blank space]
Clicking No will restore http//red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/defaults/s[/*http:www.yahoo.com"

I hit No every time, but once it flashed up while I was typing and I think I think I hit the space bar. The dialogue box disappeared and hasn't re-appeared.
NOTE: the HJT log I'm attaching was not run after these recent "red.clientapps" dialogue box.

Good news your looks better and you donot have l2m infection !!!!!

There are two more entires to take care of -

Click on Start ---> Run. Type Services.msc and heit enter. A new window will open. In the right hand pane, locate and right click on System Startup Service. In the Startup Type, choose the option - Disable.

Run Hijack This and click scan. Check the box next to following item and click on Fix checked -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightMonitor 01] "C:\Program Files\SBC Yahoo!\Connection Manager\IP InSight\IPMon32.exe"

Reboot the PC and post a fresh HJT log here

Unfortunately, the only options available under the system startup service are:
Start, Refresh, properties, and help. There is no Startup Type option.
Under properties, there is a tab called "log on" with a section that has a Hardware Profile (Profile 1), with an option to disable. Selecting Start under the System Startup services returns an "Error 2 file missing."

Was able to locate and fix the IPInsightMonitor01

I plan to keep WinPatrol (it picks up so much!), spybot, ad-aware, Norton, with occasional runs of ewido and CWShredder...

I would recommend that you delete the L2mfix files as well as CWshredder.


I would recommend the following steps to keep your PC clean (especially Step 8 now that your PC is clean) –

PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR FUTURE

Operating System
1. Keep the Windows and Internet Explorer updated with the latest fixes. These fixes are available free from Microsoft. Click on Tools in the IE menu bar and then on Windows update. You can also the following links

Windows security and critical updates
Internet Explorer security and critical updates

Also ensure that automatic updates are enabled for faster updation of the system.
(Right click on My Computer on your desktop, properties and Automatic Updates tab.


Anti-Virus Software
2. Keep your Anti-virus program updated with the latest definitions. Some of the common anti-virus programs in use are :

Norton Anti-Virus
McAfee Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Virus --- freeware
Avast Home Edition --- freeware

Use only one anti-virus program as multiple such programs can create conflicts between themselves and severely hamper the performance of your PC.


Firewall
3. You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
Sygate Personal Firewall, Kerio Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm


Internet Browsers
4. Have robust explorer settings. It is preferable to use an internet browser other that IE as most of the malware is targetted at IE. In case you prefer to use IE, then download a list of innocent looking but harmful websites from IE-Spyad and install it on ur PC. IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your internet explorer's restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't really innocent at all.

Some alternate browsers I suggest are Firefox Mozilla Browser and Opera

Ensure that Security level, irrespective of whichever browser you use, is set at Medium or higher, restrict the usage of cookies and activeX components.


Spyware Protection
5. Have a wall of protection against spyware / adware by installing SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs.
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources.
SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation and browser hijack attempts. Both have free ongoing updates.


Spyware Removers
6. Install programs for scanning for malware and uninstalling them. Two of the best programs, both are freeware, are :

Spybot Search & Destroy - A powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

AdAware SE Personal Edition - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.


Regular Maintenance of PC
7. Finally, invest some time for regular maintenance of your PC. Delete the temporary Internet files, temporary files, cookies etc. Click on Start button, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and run the program Disk Cleanup. Follow the instructions.

An alternate freeware software which can be used is CleanUp.

Keep your Registry clean. My favourite software is Registry First Aid. This is not a freeware but a trial version can be downloaded.


System Restore Points
8. Since your PC is currently clean, create a system restore point. A system restore would enable you to revert to the settings on the PC when the restore point was created. It is also a good idea to flush all earlier system restore points which may be containing infected files.

A. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

B. Restart your computer.

C. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.


Go ahead and enjoy a clean PC !!!!!!!!!!!!!
