Sorry If I couldn't help you more on this, i'm sure the solution must be there in the links I gave, but because there were too many to copy and paste here, I thought it was better to give you those links. :tazz:

If you solved it, can you reply with the solution in this thread please? So I could learn from it and remember it ;)

If I make some progress, I'll let you know. The central problem, as far as I can tell, is not simply accessing SystemRestore but rather the lack of security privileges on my own computer. If I could persuade this machine that I AM the administrator, then I could also install SP1a and SP2. Alas, in the past 12 hours some of the original problems, spyware, etc., have resurfaced. So, short term, I plan to take this computer off line.

Thanks again for the help.

Ahaa, that explains it, your administrator privileges are probably been removed by viruses/malware.

You also tell me that the malware is back again, so that must be the reason. A priority is to clean them out first.

Can you post a new hijackthislog please?

I am posting the latest HiJack This log below. After a quick perusal, I don't see some of the previous culprits on it. It will be a while before I can work of this project again today. As always, thanks.

Your log is clean, tampabelle did a great job on that..
I watched your other thread where you started with your logs and I saw the error message you were getting according to updating to SP1:

Service Pack 1 Setup could not backup registry key
HKCR\CEnroll.CEnroll to file C:\Windows|$NtServicePackUninstall$\reg 00001
1314: A required privilege is not held by the client.

I must have looked at that thread earlier. :tazz:

Here's the solution:

;)

Let me know. ;)

I followed these steps.

1. Click Start, click Run, type secpol.msc, and then press ENTER.
2. Double-click Local Policies.
3. Double-click User Rights Assignment.
4. Double-click Back up Files and directories.
5. Click Add, and then double-click the Local Administrators group
6. Click OK.

At step 5, there was nothing to add, i.e., Local Administrators group did not appear in the window, nor did anything else.
