Adware, dialer, trojan... help! [RESOLVED]

I'm attempting to clean up my aunt's computer. Apparently it looks like my little cousin downloaded some programs and some adware and dialers were put on there. I've been running the latest version of Ad-Aware SE Personal, Norton Antivirus 2004, CWShredder, and McAffee VirusScan, and still we had some problems. I've managed to identify some of the intruders: CoolWebSearch, Antivirus Gold Hijack, PSGuard... I also get this pop up message

She also had something that screwed up the desktop... The wallpaper was messed up and there was something in the taskbar that shouldn't be. It looks exactly like that trojan in here. I've somehow managed to get rid of that one though, I think since it no longer comes up.

One more thing, the IE browser homepage is also going to http://www.search-paga.com/10087/ no matter what I do.

I ran HijackThis and I'll post the log file here. I'm not really familiar with this program since I just started using from reading other posts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :tazz:

okay... i finally got back to my aunt's computer... it looks like the dialer is still there along with the virus that adds that "Your Computer Has Been Infected!" icon in the taskbar... also it seems that something is attempting to install a 'Carnival Casino' program on there... Antivirusgold has popped up again...

Ok lets see what we can do with this.

This will more than likely be a few step process. If at any point you cannot find anything requested to delete, just carry on with the process

Please print out a copy of these instructions so you have them handy if you need to reboot]

Download The Hoster Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Right-Click HERE and Save As to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop.
To use: RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf on your desktop and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

Next

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as AVGoldfix.reg
Set Filetype to All Files and save it somewhere easy to find. We will use it later.

Doubleclick the AVGoldfix.reg we made earlier.
And (still in safe mode) use the DiskCleanup Tool to empty all your Temp folders.

Delete the entire folder C:\Program Files\AntiVirusGold

In the Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info"

Then boot back to normal, run HijackThis again and post a new log.

Alrighty... I was able to do all of the steps except for the one involving the "Security Info" in the Control Panel step... I can get to Customize desktop and the Web tab... but there's no checkbox for anything about "Security Info."

Also, I still get that dialer message as well as two pop up warnings:

Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\inet10087\winlogon.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
Could not load or run 'C:\WINDOWS\inet10087\winlogon.exe' specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry.

Not sure what that's about...

Hi Again,

As i said in my first post, this is likely to be a few step process.

Here is the next step.

Firstly please create a new folder on your C drive (for example C\HJT). Install HJT into that folder and run it from there. That way it can create backups if required.

Print out a copy of these instructions so that you have then handy, when you need to reboot your PC.

Set up PC to show hidden files.(Click link if you do not know how)
Show hidden files

Please download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet.
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite

Install ewido security suite
Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, exit Ewido

Reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Once in Safe Mode, Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:

Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
Scan local drives for temporary files
Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

After Cleanup! is finished:

Run Ewido.
Click on scanner
Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
- Binder
- Crypter
- Archives
Click on Start Scan
Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "clean", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

Click Save report
Save the report to your desktop
Exit Ewido

Now scan with HJT and check the following entries if they still exist, as they may have been removed by previous proceses. The three coloured blue are option as they are considered to be foistware.

Once you have checked the entries and have decided wether to check the on the optionals then ensure no windows open except HJT and click fix checked.

Then using windows explorer, locate and delete the following files if found:

c:\windows\system\BHOmod.dll
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar <<entire folder
C:\WINDOWS\winsocks5.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\gglib.exe

Reboot pc normally,

Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Rescan with HJT and post the log back, together with the ewido and Panda logs

Unzip it to the desktop.

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:

Don't run it yet!

Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find .Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc)
Rightclick and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK. Exit the Services utility.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Ensure no windows open except HJT and click fix checked

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

* Please run Killbox.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved the file paths earlier and copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing CTRL + C:

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.
Whilst it is restarting tap the F8 KEY TO GO TO SAFE MODE AGAIN.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Now open Ewido Security Suite

Click on scanner
Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
- Binder
- Crypter
- Archives
Click on Start Scan
Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

Click Save Report
Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

So far I see no more evidence of the dialer being present or of any other malware... hopefully that's it... also, is there anywhere you can suggest that i can read up on how to help protect my aunt's computer and prevent this from happening again (hopefully)...

Open Notepad, and copy everything in the code box below and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fixme.reg on your Desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above "REGEDIT4"!

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
