Acer with Win7 is acting very erratically. Opening a simple word processing program can take three or four minutes, or may not open at all. Am constantly getting a message that Firefox or OpenOffice or whatever is not responding. Cursor is bouncing allover the place or disappears altogether. I constantly get window saying the program isn't responding. The computer froze while writing this simple note and I had to do a recovery to get it back. And now can't save it. It can take five or six minutes for the computer to shut down. Day before yesterday, the computer would not start; got a black screen. Tried my Restore that I have on a stick. F2 wouldn't open. The next morning I got a window saying that Windows would repair the Start Up. That took a few minutes and I was pleased to get my desktop back. But Bill Gates lied to me again and I had the same situation the next day.

It's working now but things very slow. I tried the Windows Fix Up from the Control Panel but that didn't do anything. Computer is Acer Aspire One, about three years old.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Uninstall these programs:
  • Adobe Flash Player 17 NPAPI;
  • MyWinLocker Suite;
Considering the fact that you have one low end laptop, AVG will be too much for it to handle. You want to save your resources. So I would uninstall AVG 2014 and go with either Microsoft Security Essentials or Panda Cloud Antivirus.

Thanks. I made the changes you have suggested, yesterday, and re-booted with the intention of writing you. But the computer wouldn't boot up. Left it till last night and it booted just fine and again this morning. Guess I need another gig of ram but reluctant to spend money on this thing.

Too early to tell if things have improved, but now get annoying pop-ups from Panda! Oh well...

Thanks again, give me a couple of days and I'll let you know if I notice an improvement.

Not much better, I'm afraid. Takes a long time just to open a basic notepad document. Maybe four or five minutes just to bring up the FireFox search page the first time. And when on line, the connection is often lost and reset. (That might be a local issure.) And forget trying to open two websites at the same time, or a webpage and a OfficeLibre word processing document.If I write a document, then close, I'll get the outline of the "Save Window" only; and have to re-close the document to get it to save. It may take a couple of mintues then, before the document saves and closes. These were all things the computer handled easily when it was newer. And still having trouble with the curser freezing.

I did notice that the computer seems to work better on battery. And if I stay off the internet...?

Thanks,
Bry

Just re-installed LibreOffice. Unbelievably, it took almost two hours to uninstall and re-install the program! Boy!

It seems this os system is corrupt.... is there a complete overhaul that will not affect my programs and files? It's either that or throw this thing in a ditch!!!

Thanks for your help...

Sorry for the late reply. bry, I'll be honest with you, it's normal for your laptop to be slow. You only have 1GB of RAM. Even thought the minimum recommended to run Windows 7 32-bit is 1GB of RAM, it doesn't mean that it'll operate smoothly at all. I know the kind of laptop you have, my girlfriend used to have one. Same brand, same specs and from day 1, it was really, really slow. She could barely open a picture. There's nothing to be done with these laptops to be honest. You can't open more than one program without the whole system becoming sluggish. I have no idea why manufacturer sell these kind of laptops since they are practically useless. A standard cellphone have more specs than these.

Yeah... thanks. It's what I figured but didn't want to believe. Maybe I'll dump it off on my girlfriend and buy myself something new! Ha! Ha!

I really only bought it for my e-mail but then started adding stuff. You know how it goes.

Anyway, thanks so much for looking at it for me. Really appreciate it.

All best,

Bry

I don't think your girlfriend will like you a lot if you just "dump" it on her haha! And no problem Bry, you're welcome :)
