I have been getting conflicting answers to this question. I recently purchased a Gigabyte GA-X99-UD4 mo/bo with a 64 GB RAM capacity. Some people say I will never be able to find a use for this much RAM. Others say you can never have too much. I am going to build a new computer with this mo/bo with an Intel Core i7-5820K CPU, and a Gigabyte GeForce GTX970 GPU. I will use the computer for a lot of Rendering and Graphics Design using Autodesk Inventor. Also, Animation will be part of my processing. So, am I wasting money installing 64 GB's of RAM? One individual told me that depending on which O/S I use, such as Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, that the RAM usage would be limited to 16 GB's. I've never heard of such a claim. Is that person correct? Any and all discussions or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

i'd always recommend going 64GB for cad, graphics design systems, 32GB is minimum i'd recommend, do you need that much? then only you can answer that because it totally depends on your work load an... Go to the full post »

W8.1 is what I would install, free upgrade to W10.
- RAM limits in Windows 8.1 Enterprise – 4GB on x86, 512GB on x64 For a developer or large corporation. I don't think you would need.
- RAM limits in Windows 8.1 Professional – 4GB on x86, 512GB on x64 For small business.
- RAM limits in Windows 8.1 – 4GB on x86, 128GB on x64 For home user.

If you do not need the features of Pro, go for W8.1,

I think that 64GB of RAM will be overkill. Of the AutoCAD programs, Autodesk Inventor appears to recommend the most RAM.

Buying RAM. If you buy a kit of 16GB 2x8GB, it is guaranteed to work, should you require more RAM, and install another 16GB kit, it probable will work without issues, but not guaranteed to be compatible and work together. To limit any issuees, I would install 32GB. (is what I have on my editing system)

you could probably run the system just fine with only 8GB of ram not that i'd recommend it for the best work experience, and in my opinion anyone who says you'd never be able to find a use for so much ram doesn't understand how pc's and the os/programs work to utilise the ram available to them.
what can make a big difference in the cad/graphics design experience is the amount of ram on your graphics card, so again more is better, a 4GB card is a lot better than a card with only 2GB say.
