Hi there. I've done everything you say to before sending my first HJT log. Almost all problems now seem to be solved (thanks to you guys :tazz: ). One thing I can't get rid of is *.finefind.nettraffic2cash.biz as a trusted zone. I've added the address to my restricted sites now but wondered if there's a way to get rid of it altogether. I also just ran another Ewido scan and it found a load of Hotsearchbar stuff. Does this need any further action to sort out? Here's my HJT log and Ewido scan report just in case I've missed something else. Many thanks.

Hello Martin (martman) and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen.

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated.

Firstly could you please disable SpySweeper and Spy Subtract from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. The same applies to SpyBot teatimer.

Please open Spybot S & D, and turn off Resident Teatimer. Do this by clicking Mode at the top of the screen, choose Advanced Mode then Tools and then Resident and unchecking Teatimer. It will hinder our attempts to clear out some files that need to be removed.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find this service:

X10 Device Network Service (x10nets)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on Properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter this item into that field (copy and paste):

x10nets

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Right click on this link Del 015 Domains.inf and choose Save (link) As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: ohb - {9ADE0443-2AB2-4B23-A3F8-AC520773DE12} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\nsm60.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xFET39j] mseatm.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [gox3RVHqU] cmczu32.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.finefind.nettraffic2cash.biz
O23 - Service: X10 Device Network Service (x10nets) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\ATIMUL~1\RemCtrl\x10nets.exe (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\nsm60.dll
mseatm.exe
cmczu32.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Hi Crustyoldbloke. Thanks for the rapid response. I've done all that. Killbox wouldn't let me paste the three different files names at once so I did each one individually. Hope that's OK. Anyway, here's my new HJT log:

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

MOST IMPORTANT: You should update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one.

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one spyware detector/prevention programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-Virus updated. ;)

Happy safe surfing Martin!

That's great news! Have a drink or two on me!! ;)

Just a few more questions if I may:

I've loaded up all the protection you advised and ran a full scan with the AVG program. It found a file called C:\86f3aef7.hta which it says could be infected by the VBS/Psyme virus. Is it safe to delete this file? (I've quarentined it for now) It also flaged up 3 trojans which all look like the same thing with slightly different file names (it calls it Clicker.7.S). I've sent them to the virus vault too. Should I be running a program specifically to gaurd against trojans?

I'm currently running both AVG and ewido security suite. Will they conflict? I've also got at least 4 spyware checkers/sweepers/blasters on as well as ad-adware SE. Is this overkill?

Finally, my wife has her own user settings on our PC. Will all the new security measures I've taken in my user protect her when she's logged on too?

Sorry for all the extra questions. Its just so great to find someone who knows some answers! Many thanks once again. Martin :tazz:

ps I've posted a new HJT log in case it helps answer any of the above

Is it possible to send me one payment back now I have a PayPal account too... Sorry about that! Martin

Hello again Martin

Firstly, a big thank you.

AVG and Ewido should be OK together. Will you be paying for Ewido after the 14 day trial period?

By all means empty your virus vault. AVG run heuristically is awesome, combine that with daily updates and scans, and it is an excellent choice. Other spyware programmes should be used for "on demand" scanning only.

I will need you to log on as your wife and post a fresh HJT log for checking.

The log you have attached is clean.

On the PayPal issue, please send me your PayPal details via PM, not in open forum for security reasons and I'll pay you; I assume it can be done easily enough.

Edit, just checked with PayPal, I just need your email address which I already have, but if I were you, I would ask PayPal to correct the double payment error, because if I send you money, they will take commission from it. Let me know via PM

I've PMed you about the PayPal stuff. I'd only want to buy the full version of Ewido if you think I really need it. How can I make sure that my other Anti-Spyware programs are running "on demand" only?

Below is the HJT log I made whilst logged on as my wife. If it looks like it needs a lot of fixing couldn't I just back-up her files, delete her user and make a copy of mine for her to use? She doesn't have much set up on it anyway (I'm always on it so she doesn't get much of a look-in!)

Hello again Martin

In an attempt to create marital harmony, I’ll just say that your wife’s settings show two Trojans, and a lovely malware hijacker. Right, let’s see if I can correct it this way, if not it will have to be a special fix. I don’t think removing your wife’s user account will get rid of it, although I must confess, I do prefer home PC’s to be run that way, far simpler.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

Firstly could you please disable SpySweeper from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything.

You may still have this, but if you deleted it, here it is again.
Right click on this link Del 015 Domains.inf and choose Save (link) As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards

Please open the trial version of Ewido Security Suite, and update the definitions to the latest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

Run Ewido Security Suite.
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The programme will now go to the main screen
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the programme scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop and include it in your reply.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please open Killbox by Option^Explicit.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\soft.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\MARTIN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\DELDIR0.EXE

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Please run CCleaner. Check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner.

This next bit needs to be done for both identities:

Please delete your temporary files.

Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start >My Computer)

You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the bottom of the fly out window.

On the very first tab (General) you will see a button labelled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.

Make sure the following are checked:Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Next, go to Start>Run>type in %temp% hit Enter and delete the content of all the temp folders shown (only the content, not the folder).

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

I will answer your questions raised once I’m happy with your PC cleanliness.

Hi Phil, I've done all that now. Here's the log I got when logged on as my wife. If you recommend not having individual users set up I could do with knowing how to achieve that without loosing our documents. Thanks:

Hello again Martin

That log is also now clean.

If you want to go to a single identity and just have your own folders, then the easiest way is via User Accounts in the control panel. When you delete a user, Windows automatically creates a folder with that person's documents and saves it to the desktop.

I'd only want to buy the full version of Ewido if you think I really need it. How can I make sure that my other Anti-Spyware programs are running "on demand" only?

Looking at Ewido, I think it is a wonderful programme but it is up to individuals to decide if they wish to pay for it's future updates. Personally, I use Microsoft AntiSpyware, which is free but at present a beta version, although the finished version is due out in July.

It is recommended that you have one antivirus and one anti spyware programme running in real-time. Generally, these programmes show an icon in the task bar when they are running. It's a good idea to have other spyware programmes too, I have Spybot and Ad-aware, but run those when you want to (I do once a week). It really is a matter of personal choice.

The only other change I would recommend would be for you to change to Mozilla Firefox as your default browser. It does import all of your favourites and passwords from MSIE. Do not delete or uninstall MSIE though, since some programmes are embedded with it.

Of all the tools you have amassed to fix your PC, I hope you won't need Killbox or DelDomains again, but I would keep CCleaner.

Thank you for your generosity, and may I wish you happy safe surfing.
