First of all, I am using MS Word 2003 and LibreOffice 5.00 Rev 2 Portable from the PortableApps.com platform. I was conducting some testing. I confirmed that I can open MS Word Docs with my LibreOffice. Now ... I was NOT able to open LibreOffice Docs with my MS Word. The question is --- SHOULD I be able to open LibreOffice Docs with MS Word? I thought that with LibreOffice claiming to be MS Word compatible, that that at the very least meant that there would be a problem free 2-way street of being able to open each others Docs by both MS Word and LibreOffice. Question #2: I see LibreOffice gives various options regarding in what format to save Docs. I see there for example Office 97-2003 and Office 2007-2013. Now ... is this ability to save LibreOffice Docs in an MS Word format 100% self-contained in LibreOffice? In other words, even if the particular computer on which one was saving that Doc with LibreOffice as an MS Word Doc at the time did NOT have MS Office Suite at all ... the Doc would still be saved as an MS Word Doc?

  • Answer#1: You kind of answered this question with question 2, however, no, LibreOffice doesn't natively save files that Microsoft Office can read. (Though Microsoft can probably "fix" that, they wouldn't want to until LibreOffice becomes serious competition to MS Office.)
  • Answer #2: You are correct in that, you can save from LibreOffice as a MS Word format, whether or not MS Word is installed on that computer. Just remember that not all formatting will be spot on. It will be pretty close, and you might have to go and fix some stuff in Word, to get it the way you want.

Thanks for your reply and for clarifying that up, amarkkassery.

I take it these answers pretty much apply to MS Word / Kingsoft Office Suite compatibility?
I have yet to even remotely download Kingsoft Office Suite, much less try it out.  But, I AM curious about it.

I have no knowledge on Kingsoft Office Suite. I would presume the same there as well.
