Yesterday I noticed that my desktop had been switched to a blue screen with a black box in the middle displaying the message:

SYSTEM STOPPED
System has been stopped due to a serious malfunction
Spyware activity has been detected
It is recommended to use spyware removal tool to prevent data loss
Do not use the computer before all spyware removed

When I go to properties, the background function is locked.

Then there is a bloody program called SpySheriff which keeps coming up at startup, and refuses to be uninstalled, deleted, or removed by ad-aware. It seems to be gone, but is back again whenever I restart and the blue desktop is always there. Please help me!

I have followed the instructions, here is my hijack this log. (as a side note, ad-aware never seems to be able to get rid of everything. Even when it says to restart, the new scans at startup always pick up new items, even ones that were supposed to be gone.)

Thanks everyone for your help!

Update - This may or may not be related, but I was backing up some files on to a DVD with Nero SmartStart, and although the DVD has been written to, the drive does not detect it when I try to open it. The software detected the disk and wrote to it, and other DVDs can be read, but for some reason this is not working, and it is the second disk. Could this be related? I've noticed some other weird stuff happening in the last few days.

I can not help with your DVD problem, but I can help with the SpySheriff pain.

First, download, install, and run CleanUp! (so the scan won't take as long because cleanup will clear temporary files) *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, backup it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running Cleanup!

Please download Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run Ewido.
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "clean", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
Reboot into normal mode.

Then, please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Save the results from ActiveScan.

I need you to post the log from Ewido, the log from ActiveScan and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

Thanks for the help so far! There is one problem though: For some reason my IE refuses to load. I rarely use it, I prefer Opera and Firefox, but when I try to open it the computer is busy for a few seconds and then nothing happens. I checked task manager and it is not listed in there either. Hopefully there is another online scanner, because I think that this may be related to all the crap on my computer. Anyways, here are the logs for Ewido and HijackThis

First I need you to move HiJackThis.exe to a permanent folder, you do not want it in a temporary file and running from a zipped folder as it is now! It's important that it be moved, in the event we need backups...

Locate it here:
C:\DOCUME~1\Justin\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX00.344\HijackThis.exe

Unzip it to it's own folder on your desktop.

Then right-click: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download the smitfraud reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Seems to be running fine, the only thing is there are two icons on my desktop, one labled 'Instant-access' the other 'Fun-Games' each with a similar variation of an 'e' in a circle as the icon, not sure what these are but I just did a full ad-aware scan and they are still there. They don't show up in add/remove programs.

- Never mind, they are dead icons... Thanks a whole [bleep] of a lot! I really appreciate the help!

You're very welcome! :tazz:

You need an anti-virus program, I recommend AVG (link at the bottom).

Congratulations your log is clean! Great job on the clean up ;)

I recommend checking the http://www.microsoft.com website periodically for critical updates to install.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Ewido Security Suite <= Protection against Trojans, Worms, Dialers, Hijackers, Spyware, and Keyloggers.

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
