I have had a problem with two Windows XP computers.  When I put a DVD it does not play, however CDs do play.  I solved it my running the five step error checking on Windows (3 step did not work).

Obviously a problem I caused but I am just wondering if anyone can give me insight on what I might have done (on both computers) and what Windows did to fix it.  Would like to know so I do not do it again.

Many thanks!

Hello,

The Make and Model of two pc's?

Try this 1

1) Click on the below link and follow the instructions

Fix problems with CD or DVD drives that can’t read or write media

2) If the problem still exists then try cleaning the drive lens. Click on the below

link and follow the instructions.

Lens cleaners

3) Update Firmware--> How to do this

4) Update suitable drivers.

Thanks.  Both computers are Gateway M675 circa 2004 but work well.  I spoke too soon.

As mentioned, one computer worked after I ran the error check.  However, this did not work as well on the second computer.  Then I tried Microsoft Fixit and although it said it did not work, when I restarted the computer it worked - but only one time!

When I swapped out the drive on the defective computer (swapped a QSI DVD drive (SBW-242C) for Toshiba), the Toshiba drive worked.  So is it possibly something wrong with the drive as you mentioned.  Will try the lens cleaner.

Appreciate the quick response.
