My wife's laptop, Windows 8.1 and protected by free Avast.  It listed several Search Engines including Conduit Search (not recommended) and ask us to choose only one search engine.  I'm guessing that it will delete the unchosen search engines.  My question is will running Malware delete Conduit Search or not.  If no, how do I get Avant antivirus to remove this Search engine.  If I chose only one search engine should it be Google?   Is there an easy want for me to remove Conduit Search?  Thanks!

Hi! My name is zep516 and Welcome to Geekstogo!
I'll do the best I can to resolve your computer issue
Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, don't continue Stop and ask! Never be afraid to ask questions! :)

I'd keep Google as a search engine, conduit can be difficult to remove so lets take a look at the computer with some diagnostic logs and we will take it from there. Also if conduit is installed it's possible there maybe other related adware issues That the logs will show us.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
  • Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Please copy and paste log back here.
  • The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Thanks Joe! Just curious, my Wife just uses this computer for e-mail,Facebook and to surf the internet. No financial transactions made. How important or critical is it for her to get rid of Conduit Search? If important, how do I get Avast to give me the choice to chose an internet browser again.
Thanks,

From my chair it's important to take a look at the machine to see what else maybe present. That's where my main concern is. How important is it to take the car in when the check engine light comes on ? I can't check your engine today without the log files asked for.

how do I get Avast to give me the choice to chose an internet browser again.

Pardon me, I'm not quite understanding your question, is Avast blocking something ?

Thanks
Joe :)

What started this was my free Avast Anti-Virus indicating we had an undesirable Search Engine called "Conduit Search". When I click on the icon. It indicated that my Wife's computer had the following Search Engines Google, Yahoo, and a couple of others I don't remember. It also listed Conduit Search and said (Not Recommended). It then would allow me to select only one search engine - at that point. I cancelled out and contacted "Geeks to Go"

Your point is well taken regarding the check engine light on a car! Let's see what's going on with this computer.

Joe,  Please have patience with me.  I have found the Download for Farbar Recovery Tool.  How do I save to my Desktop?  Do I download both the 32 and 64 bit versions?

I'll guess you have a 64Bit operating system, never seen a 32Bit win 8, so download the 64Bit to desktop.

Not to worry about patience, take your time and we don't have to finish this all tonight :)

When you run FRST it creates Two Log reports.
There should be 1 more logfile called FRST.TXT you posted Additions.txt just so you know.

That log file will be located here--> C:\Users\Susan\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\IE\92N5C4OH because that is where FRST is running from, see if you can locate it and post it, in the mean time I'll look at the additions.txt log that you did post.

Looks like Malwarebytes may have been run, because I see some deletions.

Download the enclosed--> Attached File  fixlist.txt   3.36KB   93 downloads file. Save it in the location FRST64 is. Run FRST64 and click on the Fix button. Wait until finished.

The tool will make a log in the location FRST64 is, (Fixlog.txt). Please post it to your reply.

FIRST64 is here-->C:\Users\Susan\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\IE\92N5C4OH

When you open / click on the fixlist, in the window that opens look for the little box that says Save file and click in the little circle, right now it's probably set to "open with" and is opening on the web page and your seeing all the data.

You will need to save the fix list to the same location FRST64 is and again that is here-> C:\Users\Susan\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\IE\92N5C4OH

We should get your browser to automatically download to the desktop. What browser are you using ?
