I am used to receiving notifications that updates are ready. That doesn't happen anymore, (verified this choice) and when I attempt to manually download and install updates all I get are 0 downloaded and 0 updated although the window keeps spinning and trying. Following MS troubleshooting, I found this. Windows Update Error 0x80070057 2015-10-05 T-09_54_27A. Is this a fixable problem or is there a way to manually download on my laptop to a file and then transfer that to my desktop?

Found this: Windows 7 Updates Fail with error 0x80070057
Try renaming the Software Distribution folder, and then retry the download
Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type services.msc.
Right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Stop.
Rename the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download.old
In the Services snap-in, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Start.
Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Windows Update.
Once this is done, restart the computer and check the update install status.
