Microsoft has lost interest in MSE.  Win 8 & 10 can't even run it.  Avast is a lot better than MSE and some of the paid ones like McAfee and that system hog Norton.

 

I don't see my usual recommendation for CryptoPrevent so I will add that here:

Last time I downloaded it you had to give them your IP address and they would send you the link to download it.  When it ran it asked if you were sure your PC was clean then it would try to allow everything on your PC to continue running.  The free version does not update on its own so you should check for updated versions once in a while.  If you have problems after installing CryptoPrevent you can just uninstall it.

Looks like it installed just fine, they didn't ask for IP. Must be something new.

They can both be on the same PC but I would install Avast first.  Cryptoprevent just sets a bunch of policies which prevent malware from installing in non-standard areas.  It doesn't keep running after it finishes.

Good, Avast is still on and is not going anywhere. My Adblock Plus was out of date and a new one has just been downloaded. Thanks for taking the time to answer all these questions.

Boot-time scan is the best since it runs before Windows finishes loading and thus has a better chance to catch malware.

I'll do that tonight. Normal scan turned up nothing but the "bomb" and that is just a huge file that would take too long to scan. Avast pop ups were all over the place and lasting too long. Changed the number on the top box to 0 and I don't see them any more. Thinking that has nothing to do with anything bad it blocks and only their stats on how they have helped so many people.
