Hi everyone, in advance, thanks as usual for all your help, best forum online.

 

When I rebooted my desktop (XP x64), and tried to log in, I got the message: "User environment cannot load locally stored profile.

 

I ran cmd and ran chkdsk /f /r

 

When I restarted the scan started up but then got stop on step 4 of 5. I cold turned the computer off and restarted. When I try to boot up in safe mode, normal mode, last know good configuration, it loads until system32\acpitabl.dat then stops and goes back to the loading page asking how to start.

 

Please help! If all is lost I need to try to recover a few word documents on my desktop.

Hi, a little update. I tried to repair from the XP disc, but no installations were found to repair, which I am assuming means the files are too corrupted. I am hoping to recover the files that were on my desktop. What is the best way to do this? I suppose one way would be to hook up the harddrive to another computer thanks ,

Have you checked in the BIOS to see if the HDD is detected, enabled as a boot device and that the time and date are correct

First of all, DON'T interrupt the scan! Even if it takes hours to move! It has detected an error, and is resolving to fix it. I had this same problem, and it was from a faulty drive, with bad sectors, clusters, and index points. When you cold stop(manually reboot, by holding the power button for 4 seconds), and then restart the process, it's just going to restart the entire process, all over again. I had a TB drive that never seemed to move during a faulty sector scan, and i wasted literally hours, trying this, before I went online with my laptop, and found this to be the problem. Start it, leave it overnight, or over the weekend, and see if it resolves the issue. Chances are, if you're like me, you have a faulty HDD, and will need to try a backup of essential files with a livecd(UBCD, Knoppix,Ubuntu to name a few), and then replace your faulty drive with a newer one.

You could also try going for a little walk while the scan takes place, instead of sticking around, and waiting for results
