While reading a web site (nytimes.com) without any problems on a W8.1 desktop this message popped up.

“This content requires Java 12.3. Would you like to install it now? Y or N”

 

When I clicked NO I got other screens urging me to download the offering, a “Video Player”. These screens never showed a company name.

 

Am I being overly suspicious in not installing the product? What's going on here? …. batpark

I just visited the site without Java installed and there was no popup for me.  I do have adblock plus installed (go to adblockplus.org with your browser to get it)  so I don't see the ads which change all of the time and are sometimes themselves infected.  I'd say it was probably an infected ad so you were smart not to click on it especially since there is no Java 12.3 yet.  Latest Java is 8.something)   If it happens again you might want to start a post in our malware forum and let us check your system.  (Make sure you create and post your FRST logs per the instructions in Step 3 at:  http://www.geekstogo...cleaning-guide/)
