That's a good point you make, but don't forget that Microsoft first introduced their anti virus product (MSAV) as part of DOS 6.2 and if memory serves me correctly this was back in 1993 or thereabouts... I have just fired up one of my older machines and see that it was still working well in DOS 6.22....
 
I think DOS 6.22 was the last version of their operating system to have it included, and then there was, as you suggest quite a gap before the present Windows Defender (based upon the code for Microsoft Security Essentials was introduced.
 
The current version of Windows Defender does a good job and is a worthwhile feature to have enabled on current operating systems.
 
Folks often have very firm views (entrenched views some might say) on the efficacy of certain anti virus products, with some considering only third party offerings to be worthwhile, whilst others are happy with the current Windows Defender.
 
The current version of Windows Defender  (which is quite strong) should not be considered in the same light as some early versions that were relatively weak  in their protective abilities. 
 
Talk of MSAV and DOS has made me feel quite nostalgic.... thank you for asking the question.
