I have just set up a new AIO Canon Pixma MX475. This is the fourth or fifth scanning set-up I've had over twenty years (I've had a couple of dedicated scanners) and I am finding it very difficult to work out how to do the basics.
My immediately previous scanner was within the Kodak Hero 7.1 AIO. With that I could go to System Preferences> Printers and Scanners, open the scanner and then get a scanning window where I could do a scanning overview and then adjust the area to be scanned, set the resolution, colour/mono, file format, file name and destination.
With this machine when I go to Printers and Scanners, although "Canon MX470 series" appears there, there is no option to open the scanner and I cannot find out how to generate the kind of dialogue I used with the Kodak (and earlier with HP scanners or AIOs).
I have done a minute amount of elementary printing and scanning but I really want to be able to use this tool intelligently and in a sophisticated way.
The machine came with nothing in the way of an user manual. After a lot of googling I found this:

This is not only just web-based, it is in itself very unfriendly to the user. I think I read on it somewhere that you could print it but I don't think there is a download facility. It certainly doesn't bear any resemblance to the PDF user manuals I keep for so many items (from mobile phones to dishwashers) on my computer. These vary in how good they are, but usually they have some resemblance to a print book and you can get some feel for how the functions fit together from the table of contents. With this so-called manual provided by Canon I feel as if I'm groping about in the dark, grabbing anything that looks as if it could be relevant and just proceeding by trial and error.
Is there a way of getting a dialogue of the sort I had with the Kodak (preferably to guide me through the use of three functions)?
Is there anything approaching a conventional user manual available anywhere?
