Geforce 6600 problem

I just bought a Geforce 6600 made by Gigabyte with 256 RAM online. I installed and plugged it in to the power supply(the original cable was too short, I bought one at Radioshack.) and turned on the computer. I installed the drivers that came with it, then I installed the newest ones from Nvidia's website. My dxdiag screen says that the card is installed and my computer detects it, but when I run games and have them auto detect my best graphic settings, every game sets them at the lowest setting possible. What the...?!
