Been researching this on Google, and can't make any sense of what I'm seeing. Can anyone dumb it down for a non-techie? Better yet, maybe just tell me if I need to know about it. From what little I could understand, its connected to either a dial-up connection or a cable connection. I assume the latter is like internet service from a cable-TV company. I'll either be using Sonic.net or LMI...I think they do DSL or ADSL. So do I need to know about PPPoE in regards to doing a DIY router using pfSense?

Wow, what a bunch of keywords. PPPoE was more for DSL as my recollection. Is there any reason for the inquiry?

I'm doing custom build router using pfSense, and the advice I'm getting on picking hardware components on other forums seem to revolve around whether or not I'll be using PPPoE. I question I can't answer, since every time I google it the stuff that comes up reads like Sumerian Linear A.
