Yes check the health report of the external drive with CrystalDiskInfo program.

Have downloaded CrystalDiskInfo but need to know how to select E drive on the program.  Its is only scanning "C"

If the CrystalDiskInfo not detecting your external hard dive connect to different USB port and start CrystalDiskInfo if it still wont detect your external hard drive than there is a chance the external drive have died. You can change which drive CrystalDiskInfo scans from Disk tab at menu bar.
