[Schlotkins]

I have run: adaware, spybot, CWShredder and AVG and removed everything when booted into safe mode. I successfully removed Aurora using some instuctions found here. However, as soon as I reboot the machine into standard mode, the stuff starts trying to download again (AVG detects stuff). I ran Hijack this and the log is below. I'm at the end of my abilities - usually I can get rid of this stuff but not this time.

Any assistance would be fantastic!

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Firstly could you please disable SpySubtract from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything.

To start please download the following programme, we will run it later. Please save it to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

CCleaner

Please open the trial version of Ewido Security Suite, and update the definitions to the latest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Install Ewido Security Suite.

• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The programme will now go to the main screen
• Click on Start
• Click on scanner
• Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
  • Archives
• Click on Start Scan
• Let the programme scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop and include it in your reply.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

First, thank you for the reply. I believe I have run everything as you instructed. Below is my new log and I've attached the file you requested. I just did have one virus trojan horse thingie come up so I believe there's still one or two bad things out there.

Hello again Chris

I was wondering what the first hit might reveal, and now I can see it, the very nasty Narrator; always a bad one to deal with.

Let’s see what we can do this time in revealing its hiding place. We need both CCleaner and Killbox, which you already have so now these are the others:

Download rkfiles and unzip the contents to a new folder on your desktop.
Download remv3.zip Make a new folder on the root drive C:\ and unzip remv3.zip files into it.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

Run CCleaner programme now and logoff.

REBOOT TO SAFE MODE. These tools MUST be run in Safe Mode!

Once in safe mode, double click rkfiles.bat file to run it. It will scan for a while, so please be patient. Wait until the DOS window closes. Open the C:\log.txt it created and rename it log1.txt.

Now open the folder where you saved remv3.zip files and double click the rem.bat file and let it run (please be patient, the window will close when done). It will delete the files and remove the infection and then make a log of the files it finds. The log file will be C:\log.txt and bad1.txt

**Nota Bene** Each tool uses log.txt as it’s output file so make sure you save the entries from one tool's log before running the other as it will overwrite the file if you don’t.

Hello again Chris

The scanner has done its job and the Narrator is revealed. I hope there’s nothing else hiding; let’s see.

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find this service:

AOL Connectivity Service (AOL ACS)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on Properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter this item into that field (copy and paste):

AOL ACS

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

The Narrator is still with us, it should have gone. Did anything not go according to plan?

Please uninstall these programmes from their own folder, or if they do not have their own uninstaller, go to the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS sector of the control panel, and uninstall the from there:

WebSearch Tools
Select Cashback
PCFriendly

On the Desktop, press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.

Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

itti.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark against each of the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmmpjm.exe reg_run
O20 - Winlogon Notify: URL - C:\WINDOWS\system32\lm32.dll

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

Thanks again. I don't remember anything going wrong the last time. One odd thing was the

"O23 - Service: AOL Connectivity Service (AOL ACS) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ACS\AOLacsd.exe (file missing)"

thing was not listed in HiJackthis when I went to remove it. That was the only odd thing.

On your last set of instructions, I could not find the "C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmmpjm.exe reg_run" file and windows (I was in safe mode) would not let me delete "C:\WINDOWS\system32\lm32.dll". I did follow the rest of your instructions and I'll post the startup log first and then hijackthis after that.

I should also note my killbox is a little different than the one you are describing. I change the option to "delete on reboot" and then paste from the clipboard. I get the first prompt "Are you sure" and I hit yes and then the second prompt is "do you want to reboot now" which I've been hitting no to. I hope that is right.

The Start-Up log has revealed the little blighter that is keeping narrator alive. Let’s see if we can zap it this time.

Please follow these instructions carefully.

Open Notepad, and copy everything inside the code box below (Starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as ejnwqk.reg on your Desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4

Locate ejnwqk.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.

After merged successfully prompt do this:

* Run Killbox.exe.

* Select Delete on Reboot.

* Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them then press CTRL + C

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.

After your computer reboots, Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following item, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

Well, either I have a bad version of killbox or I'm just not using it right. I did the registery thing and then I used killbox and rebooted. I did the hijack this, but the entries and files are still there. No messages yet so maybe that's a good thing, but I'm sure the files and entries in hijackthis are bad. My new log is posted below.

Sorry if I'm being dense on this killbox thing...

UPDATE: I booted into the command prompt mode and I deleted the pmmpjm file. When I went to look for the lm32.dll it wasn't there nor was the ejnwqk. When I boot into regular windows, there's a lm32.dll but no ejnwqk. Also, the pmmpjm file is not there anymore.

Hello again Chris

Looks like we had better rule it in; how unlucky to get both.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmmpjm.exe reg_run

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner.

Please delete your temporary files.

Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start >My Computer)

You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the bottom of the fly out window.

On the very first tab (General) you will see a button labelled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.

Make sure the following are checked:Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Next, go to Start>Run>type in %temp% hit Enter and delete the content of all the temp folders shown (only the content, not the folder).

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

I think we're making some progress! The pmmpjm thingie is finally off hijackthis. However, lm32.dll remains. I checked for the 5 files listed and they aren't on the drive. Below is the latest log and thanks again!
