What can I do to speed up this new PC I just got...

HP 24-b010

AMD A9-9410 Radeon R5 2.90ghz

8GB Ram

I thought I could upgrade to 16 GB ram but the internet say I cannot. I tend to multi task and it bogs down hen I open too many windows/apps. This was a gift and I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth but it's slower than my old PC.

I appreciate any advice!

Thanks.

Crucial says you can upgrade:

http://www.crucial.c...b010-all-in-one

Let's look to see if there is something slowing it down:

Get the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo...download_speccy (Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button  - Do NOT press the large Start Download button on the upper left!)
Download, Save and Install it.  Tell it you do not need CCLEANER.    Run Speccy.  When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving),
File, Save as Text File,  (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK.  Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System.
(It will be near the top about 10 lines down.) Save the file.  Attach the file to your next post.  (More Reply Options, Choose File, Open, Attach This File)

Get Process Explorer

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7 - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Thank you for your help! I am more than happy to buy and install RAM as long as the system is expandable. I went to the Crucial website and it seems to be expandalbe. Question though, which RAM would be best?

Question though, which RAM would be best?

You have two slots and only one is in use so the simple solution is to buy another 8 GB DDR4-2400

HP verifies that you can add RAM:

http://support.hp.co...ument/c05145199

This is what you have now:

Technical Data: HMA81GS6AFR8N-UH Manufacturer Hynix Manufacturer Reference HMA81GS6AFR8N-UH Capacity 8GB Name PC4-19200 Short Form 8GB(1Rx8) Type 260Pin Construction Type SO-DIMM Model SO-DIMM Organization 1Gx64 Description DDR4 2400MHz Number of Ranks 1 Extension unbuffered Error Correction non-ECC DRAM Organization 1Gx8 Number of DRAM 8 Construction Type of DRAM FBGA(78ball) Type Height 31.25mm Voltage

1,2V

Looks like Crucial is probably the best price.  Amazon has one

Crucial 8GB Single DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200) SODIMM 260-Pin Memory CT8G4SFS824A

for $50.

Process Explorer shows several problems.

System Idle Process    59.10    0 K    4 K    0
firefox.exe    13.59    617,024 K    664,796 K    9136    Firefox    Mozilla Corporation    (Verified) Mozilla Corporation
procexp64.exe    4.68    22,364 K    53,020 K    5648    Sysinternals Process Explorer    Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com    (Verified) Microsoft Corporation
dwm.exe    4.22    50,828 K    49,384 K    10088
System    4.11    132 K    1,028 K    4
Interrupts    2.78    0 K    0 K    n/a    Hardware Interrupts and DPCs

System Idle is too low.  It should be around 90 or better.  This is mostly caused by Firefox so I would try running Firefox in Safe Mode and see if this improves a lot.  That would imply that one of your extensions is causing the problem.  To get into Safe Mode:

https://support.mozi...using-safe-mode

You can then go back in and enable a few extensions at a time until you find the one that eats CPU time in Process Explorer.

Interrupts is way too high.  This is normally around 1 or less  but should never be higher than 1.5.  Over 1.5 you start to get stuttering and ugly video.

Usually this means you have a bad driver.  Check the HP site and see if they have any updated drivers for you.

Your hard drive is a Seagate.  It's junk and is already throwing errors.  Personally I would complain or maybe send it back since it's brand new.  Seagate makes a tool called seatools that will check you hard drive.  Be interesting to see if it passes their test.

Thank you very much for all the advice and help. I ran seatools and it passed. When you say it's junk, is it just a cheap hard drive, junk because it has errors already or both? What part of the info I sent indicates bad sectors?

Again, I appreciate all your time and advice!!!! I will be purchasing and installing the RAM and help that should help the stuttering and slow loading pages. :-)

The above errors Raw Values look really bad.  Seagate has a bad rep for reliability and I have three that have failed on me so I believe the rep.  I would watch these above values and if they continue to increase you can expect it to fail.

You can get a second opinion from speedfan:

(Don't get the latest version as filehippo has a bad copy.  Instead get version 4.51.  Avoid the speedfan website's version as it is full of adware.)

Download, save and Install it (Win 7+ or Vista right click and Run As Admin.) then run it (Win 7+ or Vista right click and Run As Admin.).

click on the S.M.A.R.T. tab.  Click on the down arrow to the right of the Hard Disk box.  Select your hard drive.  Click on Perform and In-depth Online Analysis of this hard disk.  Your browser will open.

At the bottom of the new page will be a line:

The link to get back and see a new report about this hard disk in the future is this.

Right click on the underlined "this" and select Copy Link Address.  Move to a Reply and Paste (Ctrl + v).
