OK.  One of the services listed on the right are at fault.  Usually it's wuauserv   which is Windows Updates.  Let's turn it off and see if that helps

 

Search for:

 

services.msc

 

and hit Enter.

 

This will bring up a services window.  Scroll down to Windows Update and right click on it and STOP the service.  Leave it stopped and look at Process Explorer.  Does the amount of CPU used by the svchost.exe with process ID 1424

go down significantly?

Very difficult to focus on one line Process Explorer because all the lines are jumping about, but it seemed to make no difference when I switched Windows Updates off.

I was just about to close down when the hard drive running so fast it was whining loudly caught my attention as it often does, and I looked into Task Manager to see if could find anything that pointed to why so much activity was being generated by just having Firefox open. Iclosed fFirefox before opening Task Manager, and was surprised to see one item displayed within the services TAB. It read as follows across the line -

 

Browser   1424   Computer Browser    Running   netsvcs

 

It caught my attention because it was the item that had also caught yours when I had to investigate it earlier via command prompt.

Actually it looks like stopping Windows Update made a big difference.  The 1424 svchost.exe is now using only 0.02

System Idle is now 84.21 where before it was 46.90.

 

Windows 7 often has problems with Windows Update. Turn Windows Update back on and then See if you can get

 

System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 to run.  Will take a few hours I'm afraid.

Then try Process Explorer again and see if you have better luck.

 

Computer Browser is not something you really need so you can go into services.msc as before and stop it and change the startup type to Disabled.  OK.

 

Guess I should have told you before but if you hit the Space bar when running Process Explorer it will stop jumping around.  Hit it again to start it changing again.

I have tried to dowload the System Update Readiness Tool but when I press to install it opens a window saying 'Only one version of wusa. is allowed to run'

 

Oooops !! I have just seen in the background another window which is saying ' searching for updates on this computer' so perhaps we are still in progress with the readiness tool installation. I had not realised this had gone behind other pages.

 

Is this search the part tht takes hours, it is just running and running ?

Well, it's bedtime now and I have to shut-down. The little window entitled ' Windows update stand alone installer' and bearing the sub-title - searching for updates on this computer - continues to scan for unbelievably difficult to find targets, with nothing to show for the effort.

Looks suspiciously like the earlier scans and updates I mentioned thatjust hang.

I hope I wasn't just being impatient ? The window was running 5/6 hours. Maybe I was, so I have opened the Windows update readiness tool again and proceeded with install. It's just after 6.30am here and I will leave for work i an hour. I will let the window run however long it likes while I am at work and continue later today if necessary.

I have suspended AVG but was unable to find how to suspend Mbam. Cannot find how to switch it off.
