Hello on the forum,

I would like to ask you for help since my computer acts oddly when playing recent to brand new games.

My computer is as follows: https://www.czc.cz/f...l2trmn85/seznam (please ignore the language of the page, the components are clear). The only exception is that I have replaced the graphic card with MSI GeForce GTX 1060 6GB DDR5. Running Windows 10 and using latest stable GeForce Experience and drivers.

Now, the problem is so (and I would like to stress that this problem appeared as well when I had the previous graphic card - GTX 760) that when I play new games (regardless on the detail settings) like Mafia 3, Watchdogs 2, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, etc. the comptuter responds well for 5-20 minutes (with framerate around 60 fps on ultra/very high settings on FullHD) and then it freezes. When I say freezes, I mean that the image completely stops moving and the sound goes like tah-tah-tah-tah-tah (stutters). Alt-tab is not working, neither in ctrl-alt-del, I always have to hard reboot using the power button.

It is a custom build computer built by my component vendor based on a configuration I discussed on a forum.

I checked with a gauge that the computer takes about 220 Watts under the heaviest load in the games.

Could anybody please help me about what can be causing this weird behaviour? I think the computer is powerful enough to allow play on ultra on HD but this freezing makes playing impossible.

Help would be much appreciated

Thank you

Get the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo...download_speccy (Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button  - Do NOT press the large Start Download button on the upper left!)
Download, Save and Install it.  Tell it you do not need CCLEANER.    Run Speccy.  When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving),
File, Save as Text File,  (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK.  Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System.
(It will be near the top about 10 lines down.) Save the file.  Attach the file to your next post.  (More Reply Options, Choose File, Open, Attach This File)

Get Process Explorer

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7 - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Nothing obvious in your logs other than you have some obsolete Java versions which should be removed.

Version 8.0
Update 31
Build 13

Java has been very vulnerable to infection so unless you absolutely need it you should not reinstall it.

If you feel you must have Java:
Get the latest Java at:

Save it to your PC then close all browsers and install it.  Do not let it install the yahoo toolbar or other foistware.

(If you also want the 64 bit version then use the 64 bit version of IE to get it.)

You may need Java for NVidia's autodetect but make sure you have the latest.

Also visit intel and see if they have any new drivers for you:

High values of  Interrupts in Process Explorer usually indicates a driver problem but yours is very low however it still sounds like a DPC Latency problem.

Try the DPC Latency Checker

It has a problem with Win 10 (a constant 1000 microsecond bias so it reads higher than it should) but I've heard that it still works otherwise.  See if you see any big red spikes.  Try bringing up one of your games.

I just worked another of these and he found some relief by searching for

msconfig
Hit Enter.

Then Go to Services tab and click on the box to hide Microsoft Services then uncheck
everything that remains.  Go to Startup tab and uncheck everything.  OK and
reboot.   He claimed it didn't help but when he went back and reenabled everything it fixed his slowness.

Also keep process explorer running.  If it starts stuttering try and get a log.  That might show us a memory leak.

Another program to keep running is speedfan:

Download, save and Install it (Win 7+ or Vista right click and Run As Admin.) then run it (Win 7+ or Vista right click and Run As Admin.).

It will tell you your temps in real time tho the default is to show the hard drive temp in the systray.  You can change it:  Hit Configure then click on the highest temp and check Show in tray

This way we can rule out something getting hot under load.  (Your temps when it is doing nothing are very low but I suppose there could be some problem under load perhaps the thermal paste wasn't put on properly)

Let's also look at your event logs:
(best to run this after experiencing stuttering)

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Right-click VEW.exe and Run AS Administrator
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.  (Each time you run VEW it overwrites the log so copy the first one to a Reply or rename it before running it a second time.)

Unfortunately, I cannot run the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso as it says "VEW has not been coded for your language (Czech)" when I click Run.

Moreover, you wrote that "Also keep process explorer running.  If it starts stuttering try and get a log.  That might show us a memory leak.". This is not possible, the screen does not stutter, it simply freezes beyond anything and I cannot swith to Process explorer as I have to hard reboot.

Would it be possible to use any tool to put the computer under pressure/load and see whether the freezing also occurs outside the games? (Outside a game it has never happened yet)

Prime 95 will stress it something terrible.

http://www.mersenne.org/download/

It's a good idea to keep Speedfan running while you run it as it can cook your CPU in no time.  You have to use Task Manager to kill the process.  Killing the windows doesn't seem to do it.

Another option is

http://www.cpuid.com.../pc-wizard.html

Their perfmonitor2 may also be of some use.

I think minitoolbox will give us the system event logs regardless of language.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

  • List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
  • Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Let's see if you got any BSODs:

    Download BlueScreenView

Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit, Select All.

Go File, Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

I played for 2 hours yesterday (Watch Dogs 2, ultra details, FullHD) to test and capture events, but of course, no freezing occured :-)

I attach my Temperature monitor just for info. (Temp 2 is stuck at 127 °C but I do not think it is actually measuring something).

Looking at your log the GPU is running a bit warm.  Is its fan working (if it has a fan)?  Is its heatsink free of dust?

highest temp i see for gpu is 68c, while not the best temp while under load playing a game i've seen, it's still good and nothing to worry about. certainly not something i'd think would cause the freezes described rkinner.

sorry can't really offer any better ideas to try and solve the issue than what you've already suggested but i'd definitely like to see him run a prime stress test, option 3 blend, (not forgetting to keep an eye on the temps.) to help rule out a cpu, ram problem, if there's no fails there after about 20/30 minutes (longer it runs better the test and why some people say to stress test for 24hrs but i've found a 30 minute test is good enough for my purposes when stability testing.) then i'd run a dedicated ram test just to double check the ram. :- http://www.howtogeek...m-for-problems/

after that i'd think it's more likely a software/os problem than a hardware issue, not that you can definitely rule out a hardware issue of course but i'd think it's less likely so i'd probably run a file check or something on the os but i'm sure i'm trying to teach my grandmother to suck eggs when it comes to offering you advice on how to diagnose a windows 10 os or software issue rkinner. :D

Terry1966:  Feel free to step in.  I  am no expert on Win 10.  I have one Win 10 that I use just for capturing TV shows and and refuse to use it for anything else.  Prefer Win 7.  I know 68C isn't bad enough to cause a problem but it's the only thing that climbed and in the two hours he played the game it didn't fail.  Just thinking perhaps if he had played for 3 hours it might have gone up enough to cause a problem.  His original complaint was that it worked fine for 20 minutes then froze.  Usually this is heat related or perhaps a memory leak so I am trying to rule out heat.

to be honest i think you've ruled out a heat issue.

temps look fine and the gpu would need to be in/near the 80's before i considered it to be a problem. temps don't usually rise much after they've levelled off under load.

the differences you're seeing is when the fan speeds up and then slows down again keeping the temps below 70c. the 1060 gpu won't throttle until about 83c i believe while it's max temp is about 95c

ram, hard drive, psu or software would be my guesses we'll know more when he's run prime and the memory test but if i had to put money on anything and it's not a ram problem then i'd say it was an os, software/driver issue and not having worked on a windows os myself for longer than i can remember i'm definitely going to leave that area to you. :prop:

for some reason, i seem to remember the sound driver could cause the problems being experienced but don't remember why.

Perhaps the fan sometimes doesn't come on when it should?

Stuttering is sometimes a DPC Latency issue which is often caused by a bad driver so your memory could be right.  Usually Process Explorer will show a high value for Interrupts (~1.4+ ) but in this case it looks good:

    Interrupts    0.60    0 K    0 K    n/a    Hardware Interrupts and DPCs

Too bad the best tool for DPC Latency doen't work all that well on Win 10:

    http://www.thesycon....ncy_check.shtml

It does run but has a very high base level of about 1000 microsceconds.  Still it can show a bad driver.

can't rule it out but i'd be more inclined to think it either worked just fine or didn't work at all, and temps show to me it's working just fine.

another thing that just popped into my head, can't remember all the details now but didn't a fairly recent windows 10 update cause freeze problems for some people and was fixed by a later update, haven't checked if michal86 os is totally updated so will again leave that to you. :D

Win 10 is probably good as his last Windows Update was 1/15/17 so he's getting updates.  He said he has had the problem for a while.  This is a new GPU so my fan idea is probably no go unless it's the CPU fan.
