I ran REVO and uninstalled Mozilla Firefox.
Before reinstalling it, I ran the Windows Repair Tweaking tool again in safe mode. This time, it took longer to complete than when I ran it before. (The first two items in the repair list took about 45 minutes. The last time the tool ran through those items in about 5 minutes. No idea why.)
After rebooting, I did a fresh install of Firefox. It works fine.
More importantly, when I go to all of my desktop internet shortcuts, they all work!!
Not only that, but the AdBlock that I had previously installed is on the browser home page as well.
Working shortcuts is certainly good news. This has been driving me nuts for the last 2 weeks.
Are there any final checks to be done to ensure that everything is running OK?
I think we are done and can clean up:
Thanks very much for your help RKinner! It is greatly appreciated. I will also follow your recommendations above.
Speccy was not installed as part of this process. Should I use DelFix to uninstall all the tools?
I had some bad experiences with delfix so I've stopped using it but if you are comfortable with it be my guest.
