Why would you use an ancient version of Opera?! That opera@usb uses version 12.18 of Opera.

Download from Opera themselves the portable version, which uses the latest version http://www.opera.com/computer/portable

i searched the net for best browsers for use with flash drives and opera@usb was recommended....that is the reason.

i clicked on your link but it does not work.

step 1. no problem

step 2. hit 'run' and a box appeared with message...'' downloading winxp compatibilty installer '' thats it...it just sat there without anything happening.

any advice on my original question regarding failing to open from my flash drive.

Try downloading the portable version of Opera from portableapps.com:

http://portableapps..../opera_portable

Download the one under the section "Opera 36.x Legacy Release for Windows XP/Vista"

Hope this does work for you.

Any error message?

Try downloading the zip file of it from here, extract it to you USB. Now that you'll have a folder OperaPortable36 on your USB, open up that folder and run the OperaPortable.exe file in it. Works?

Since I think it is a really really bad idea (from a security standpoint) to run such an ancient and vulnerable browser I cannot help you with that.

But I would've liked helping you getting one of the newer portables from Opera to run.

i carried out your instructions and opera installed ok on my flash drive.

after opening there were 3 folders and 2 icons sitting there,

i could not find the exe file  after checking these.

my only experience with usb drves was a few years ago when i was given an mp3 player.......i d/loaded music and deleted music without any problem.

it seems i naively thought that i could do the same with a web browser.

You should be able to have a browser on your USB.

From the two icons in the folder, one (with a red circle icon) is named OperaPortable? Double click that and see if Opera opens up normally.

i have operaportable36 on the usb...... but after  opening the 3 folders and 2 icons i had no success.

could you recommend an alternative portable usb browser bearing in mind that i initially chose an old and insecure option.

What do you mean by "but after  opening the 3 folders and 2 icons I had no success"? Have you double-clicked on the icon that is a red circle? What happened when you did that?

There are other portable browsers, but I would first like to see if Opera is really not working.

operaportable36 is the folder, not the program itself. To open the program you need to double-click on the file (or icon, it has a red icon) named OperaPortable which is inside.

What happens when you double-click on that file? (maybe send a screenshot of what you are seeing.)

Hi bjr1000

Again sorry for the frustration, hope now will get it right...

The problem seems to be that you are not sending the whole program (which is everything in the operaportable36 and not only the OperaPortable file.

You should go to My Documents>Downloads, where you found the icon that opened up okay last time, and instead of sending the icon only to the flash drive send the whole operaportable36 folder to the flash drive not only the icon. Then once the whole folder is on the flash drive open the folder there and double-click the icon. It should work the same as it did from the Downloads folder.

Report back!

d/l to flash drive as instructed[took a long time].

opened it  up but there was no red circle icon showing.

if i can reiterate............. if the icon showed and all was ok i would not use it because of the reasons stated in your first post.

i need to go forward and install something compatable and user friendly.
