Hello,

I have a Gateway Laptop running windows xp pro 32-bit sp3.

Xfinity Modem and Linksys Router.

This laptop was giving to me by my daughter,

so first thing I did was run the Recovery Disc so to put the pc back to factory.

The install went good, but I can't get on the internet.

It has 2 small monitor screens at the bottom, they read;

-Wireless Network Connection (linksys

Signal Strength--Excellent

Status--Connected

The other one reads:This one has a Red X

Local area connection

A network cable is unplugged

I click, start, Internet Explorer  I don't have Google or Firefox yet.

When I click on it I get: The page cannot be displayed.

One time I got:  403 Forbidden Error

In property Manager,their isn't any yellow ? or !....

Can someone please help with this

Right click on My Computer and select Manage and then Device Manager then View, Show Hidden Drivers.  Now look in the right pane for yellow flagged devices.  Right click on one and select properties then click on the Details tab.  Change Property to Hardware IDs.  Click on the top one then right click and copy.  Paste that into a reply.  Repeat for all yellow flagged devices.

The yellow mark read,  SymEvent.

SymEvent is a driver from Symantec or Norton Anti-Virus.  If this PC doesn't have Symantec or Norton installed then right click on the SymEvent driver and Uninstall.  If it does have it try to uninstall it.  Their firewall could be killing your internet.

Under Network Adapters

what devices do you have?  Even if you can't copy and paste you can still look at the numbers and write them down.  I just need the top line.  It will look something like this:

PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&SUBSYS_77211462&REV_0C

Sorry but I don't know what happened, the yellow mark is no where around, can't find it.

With the Norton or Symantec, was only a 30 day free trial. I would of deleted them anyway, I use Avast Anti-Virus.

When you click start and under Owner or Admin there is Internet Explorer, when I click on IE I get

Page Cannot Be Displayed

But under the home page I type, www.msn.com. I got this page. I can go into the ads on this page.

But when I try to type Google or Firefox I get....Page Cannot Be Displayed.

So I decided not to use the address bar, but the page bar. So far so good, everything seems to be working.

Just have to add Avast and whatever else I need, to help keep it safe.

Just want to thank-you very much for your help.

If there is anything else I need, just let me know.

John

Probably a good idea to run the Norton removal tool to get rid of the last dregs of your symantec/Norton demo.

https://support.nort...erProfile_en_us

Sounds like your IE home page is set wrong but it's easy to change.  Get to msn or google or whatever you want for a home page.  Make sure it's the only page open  (close any other tabs).  Then Control Panel, Internet Options, Use Current.

The problem with setting XP back to factory is that you lose all of your updates.  I think Microsoft may have stopped offering XP updates at all.  You can still get them but you have to pull them from the catalog.

Do you know what service pack you are on now?  My Computer, System Properties should show you.  You need to be at SP3.  Are you?

The catalog is at:

https://www.catalog....t.com/Home.aspx

you will have to install their program to read the catalog and download stuff.

Quicker would be SP4:

http://www.majorgeek...unofficial.html

This is an unofficial update but supposedly pretty complete.  If you SP1 or better it should work for you.

I tried to install Speccy but it would't let me.

I tried to install Avast, and got this;

The procedure entry pointRemoveVectoredExceptionHandler could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll.

Now it showed up as Service Pack 2...

Before I did the Factory Recovery it was SP3

I think I'm going to use Yahoo as my home page.

It also came with McAfee.

Also something called BigFix, which I don't know what that is.

Try the unofficial SP4.  That will get you up to SP3 - most software if it works on XP only works with SP3.  If you have an AMD processor you might want to find

KB953356 in the catalog and install it first.

There used to be a problem with SP3 on AMDs that put them in a boot loop after the upgrade.  The KB fixed it - it's probably in the SP4 but I don't know that for sure.

McAfee also needs a removal tool.

Download the McAfee Removal tool

Save and run it.

I ran both removal tools.

Downloaded kb953356.

Downloaded the unofficial SP4.

Forgot, I didn't do the kb953356 first.

If you installed SP4 and can boot OK afterward then you didn't need it.  I don't even know if you have intel or amd CPU.

With intel you don't need the KB.  Just with AMD.

Shouldn't hurt anything.

You can try windows repair all in one:

Download it and save it then run it.

You can skip to step 4 or 5 where it gives you the same picture as in the above link.

I think it comes with most options checked by default but at least check these:

Reset Registry Permissions
Reset File Permissions
Register System Files
Repair WMI
Repair Windows Firewall
Repair Internet Explorer
Repair MDAC & MS Jet
Repair Hosts File
Remove Policies Set By Infections
Repair Icons

Remove Temp Files
Repair Proxy Settings
Unhide Non System Files
Repair Windows Updates
Repair CD/DVD Missing/Not Working

I ran the repair and I can now get into Add/Remove.

Thank-You

I have a xp pro desktop with sp3 and Intel 4.

Can I run the repair and info you gave on this pc?

I think I may be missing some dll , and/or registry files,

from when I ran Super Spyware, Malwarebytes, cCleaner, WinDirStat, and Auslogics.

On my desktop, total space I have is 38.2GB

Problem is I have 35.9GB used space

          and            2.33GB free space

Any way to clear up some more space?

I don't have music or videos, some pictures.

I tried everything to clear up some space, including using those programs I showed you.

Nothing seems to work.
