So I live in a rented apartment and the internet provider for this place is Hagray and my internet experience here is very bad. I can see that people are using their own modem/routers from the list of wifi connections and I bought my own as well. I set my device up and at the end it said I need to call the internet provider to activate it but the people at Hagray said they don't do that for here. My previous roommate that left told me that only certain modem/routers can work here. So I wanted to know if there is a certain modem/router that doesn't need to be activated by they internet provider and if there is please tell me. The one I bought is Netgear N300.

Can I ask what is telling you that the other people are not using modems supplied by Hargray.

 

From the limited info that I can find it suggests that Hargray supply either Arris or Linksys devices info here and here and as long as you use a modem supplied by Hargray you can connect any PPPoE supported wireless router to it that you like, see below, what brand of modem are you connecting your wireless Netgear router up to. 

 

VII. Device Attachment Rules

Hargray provides DSL and Cable modems as part of the broadband service. Customer may attach any industry-standard device beyond the DSL or Cable modem. However, such devices must support PPPoE. If Hargray discovers a customer device is harmful to its network, Hargray has the right to request that the customer remove such device.

 

 

Btw, a rather unhappy Hargray customer advising that a Netgear N600 was not compatible with Hargray here

Hargray told me that their devices won't work either. Thank you for telling me about the incompatibility of the Netgear though guess I made a bad purchase.

Did the same myself with a Linksys wireless router and my broadband provider here in the UK Sky point blank refused to connect it due to it not being purchased from them, coincidentally Sky force Netgear routers on folk so your choice of brand was a good one at least.
