I have a 4,200 sqft house and I currently have AT&T Internet.  The WIFI sucks and the speed they advertise and I pay for is not real.  I am thinking of upgrading the speed, but I think using their AT&T supplied modem and router is probably not the best choice.  I also wonder what is the best way to get a wired connection to all parts of the house without running CAT5 cable everywhere?

You have to use their modem if you want to use their service. I used to have them and switched to TimeWarner, now Spectrum, which is faster and cheaper. You don't have to use their wifi though.

 

There are wifi repeaters which you can extend the range. As well, there are routers, like Cradlepoint, which can use the wifi as WAN so that you can hardwire connections from the router.

 

I am using an ethernet over power line and it seems to work quite well. It is only point to point, but I believe you can have more then just two.

 

The best way to get a wired connection is to use wires. Otherwise you have to use wireless options.

What about the router?  Would that improve things?

You could use another wifi router which might have a better antenna, which would allow better coverage.

 

Is the router is a good location in your house in terms of the area  in which you want to cover? The construction of your house could make it difficult to have good wifi coverage, such as if there is a lot of metal  in the walls.

 

The AT&T modem is also a router, including wifi. You can turn off the wifi on it and attach another router or wifi device to it or add an additional wifi device (having two wifi in the same area could reduce performance).
