Hi,I have been considering upgrading my laptop and also considering buying a new one(caught in 2 minds at the moment)

The longer I can keep my current one running the more I can save for a new one.

I have managed to keep my current laptop going for 5 years now and it is still performing reasonably well but I don't know whether I should invest anymore money in it or go for a new one as I don't think it has much life left in it but who knows?.

It's a Dell Latitude E5420 but Dell won't support windows 10 on this model even though that is what I have installed.

I think DELL stopped support for driver updates etc in 2014.

Lately I have been getting the plugged in,not charging problem every now and again....I think it might be the power socket coz if i put a little bit of pressure on it it starts charging again.

I was going to re-seat my processor in the past aswell due to heat issues and high cpu usage but never got round to it.

Could someone tell me how to perform a good maintenance on my laptop and make sure it is error free and make sure my internal hardware is sound?

BTW could someone also show me how to clean and re-apply thermal paste to the processor?

I am going to upgrade my RAM to 8gb in the next few weeks aswell after advice from this forum.

Any help and advice appreciated.

This video shows how to remove the heatsink so you can get to the fan.

They are a little heavy handed with the thermal paste but it gives you a pretty good idea how it works.  I use a vacuum cleaner hose on the heatsink fins along with a brush to get it as clean as possible.

I prefer the Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound 3.5 Grams with ArctiClean 60 ML Kit

Amazon: Price: $11.36

Instruction for use:

Use Speedfan to check your work:

Download, save and Install it (Win 7+ or Vista right click and Run As Admin.) then run it (Win 7+ or Vista right click and Run As Admin.).

It will tell you your temps in real time tho the default is to show the hard drive temp in the systray.  You can change it:  Hit Configure then click on the highest temp and check Show in tray.

Note that High CPU Usage is not a symptom of a clogged heatsink.  If you have high CPU usage then get Process Explorer:

Get Process Explorer

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7+ - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Hi RKinner,

thanks very much for the video link ......greatly appreciated.

I am going to buy the arctic kit you recommended next week so hopefully next week my laptop will be tip-top.

I'm not sure if I have the big hitters at the top of the list as I clicked the cpu column header more than twice but here is the result of process explorer:

You got it right.  Looks good.  A lot of svchost files but that happens if you tell window to use a separate svchost for each service.

Hi, I ordered the arctic kit and also purchased 8gb RAM today but am not going to invest in an ssd just now.

For ages now I've had a missing usb mass storage controller driver and I managed to find the correct driver the other day so everything good so far.

The only issue I have to get fixed is the power supply connector to fix the battery plugged in not charging issue but I have seen online lot's of other people getting this problem so it might not necessarily be to do with the power connector.

Appears the power jack can be replaced but you have to remove the heatsink so best to do it at the same time you clean it.  Found one here:

Hi,again thanks for the links....greatly appreciated!

In my device manager under Universal Serial Bus Controllers I have one exclamation mark saying Unknown USB Device(Device Failed Enumeration).

Am I still missing a driver?

The device status say's >> This device is disabled because the firmware of the device did not give it the required resources. (Code 29)

Right click on Computer and select Manage and then Device Manager then View, Show Hidden Devices.  Now look in the right pane for yellow flagged devices.  Right click on one and select properties then click on the Details tab.  Change Property to Hardware IDs.  Click on the top one then right click and copy.  Paste that into a reply.  Repeat for all yellow flagged devices.

From the error you give tho it may not have a Hardware ID.  Whatever device it is does not respond correctly so the device may be too old for win 10 to talk to it.  Apparently your laptop has a card reader built in.  Does it work?

You might go to intel.com and see if they have a new chipset driver for you.

Hi,I currently have a little express card thing installed with 2x 3.0 usb inputs,is that possibly the culprit?

I use the card reader alot and that seems to work fine.

Here are the device manager details:

usb root hub 3.0

USB\ROOT_HUB30&VID1912&PID0015&REV0002
USB\ROOT_HUB30&VID1912&PID0015
USB\ROOT_HUB30

USB Mass Storage Device
USB\VID_0951&PID_1666&REV_0110
USB\VID_0951&PID_1666

the other ones just say usb unkown

The first one

USB\ROOT_HUB30&VID1912&PID0015

looks like it has a Renesas Electronics chip in it so it is probably your "little express card thing installed with 2x 3.0 usb inputs"  Does it say who makes it?  Any part numbers on it?

Intel apparently uses the same chip in one of their desktop boards and they have some firmware updates available for it so once we find out who makes it perhaps they will also have firmware updates for us.

The second one is probably a Kingston DataTraveler 3.0 usb drive.  Does that sound right?  It should not need a driver.

Hi,RKinner,

Thanks for taking the time to help btw.

The express card says : NECXG  AKE

I removed the card from the laptop and uninstalled the renesas drivers that were on it.

The datatraveller is a usb stick...could it be faulty?

I also use an electronic cigarette called an innokin coolfire 4 tc100 and charge it from usb from my laptop but have been getting usb malfunctioned errors when charging(I think it is the usb to mini charge cable as it seems to happen if I move the cable slightly)

thanks.

AKE doesn't seem to have a driver newer than Win 7 but you can try it:

Renesas/Nec uPD720201/720202 USB 3.0 Drivers Version 3.0.23.0 WHQL

http://www.station-d...&id=122&lang=en

There is a firmware update

 Renesas/Nec uPD720200 USB 3.0 Firmware Version 3.0.3.4

but I can't be sure it's for your card.

If the datatraveller stick is showing a yellow flag in different USB slots then it probably is bad.

I also use an electronic cigarette called an innokin coolfire 4 tc100 and charge it from usb from my laptop but have been getting usb malfunctioned errors when charging(I think it is the usb to mini charge cable as it seems to happen if I move the cable slightly)

I think you should proably use a separate charger for it.

Hi,Unfortunately they are the drivers I had installed ....I am just going to invest in a newer card, one that is win10 supported.

Thank you for taking the time to try and find a newer driver for me though, much appreciated.

I'll need to test my flash drive but I don't have it at the moment.

I started to use the wall charger for the e-cig as the usb malfunction alerts were really annoying me.

I get my RAM and arctic kit this week so I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks again for all the help!

Sounds good.

Hi RKinner,

My RAM came this morning,I purchased a different RAM from what was recommended to me as I got it for half the price.

I installed it this morning but don't know if it is installed correctly.

I got a warning from my bios when I switched it on telling me RAM was detected and that settings had changed.

I ran CPUz and the mhz is same as last RAM....not really noticing a speed boost but I have not tried any heavy apps yet.

If my laptop is working fine does that mean the RAM is ok or do I need to run memtest?
