Hi, I have an ASUS N550JK laptop with Windows 10.

It has a very strange fault when I unplug the charger, browsing the internet is not possible, regardless of which browser I use or whether it is WiFi or ethernet.

If I go into the command prompt and ping the router by IP or microsoft by name there are no errors.

Running the windows network diagnostics produces the enclosed results.

If I plug the charger back in it does not fix the problem, I have to reboot.

If I reboot the laptop with charger unplugged it does not work.

Basically the only way I can unplug the charger and keep the network running is to put it to sleep or shut it down first.

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks

Iain

:welcome:   ovenglove,

Couple of questions if I may;

Did this problem start after you upgraded to Windows 10 or installed the Windows 10 Creators Update.

Have you checked the power plan for the Network Device, if your battery is failing/weak Windows could be shutting down the device to save power, see the copy/paste steps and my screenshot below;

Click the Start button.
Type Power Options and press Enter.
Click Continue if prompted.
Click “Change plan settings” under the power plan that is currently selected.
Click “Change advanced power settings”.
In the Power Options box, click the + next to “Wireless Adapter Settings” to expand it.
Then click the + next to “Power Saving Mode”.
In the list that appears next to On battery, select “Maximum Performance”.
Click OK.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I did try this a while ago in desperation when the problem first appeared however it didn't help.

The problem is present for both Ethernet connection and WiFi as I mentioned above.

Also I can still ping and additionally my VPN still connects, Dropbox still syncs and as I have just discovered the TOR browser will work but chrome, explorer and edge all return with the same problem.

Sorry but you you overlooked answering one of the questions asked;

Did this problem start after you upgraded to Windows 10 or installed the Windows 10 Creators Update.

Your particular model of notebbok is/was known to have a rather poor quality main power brick and you may need to replace it in order to solve this issue

Hi, I have no idea if it started before or after the windows update, it may have started just before or possibly just after.

It can't be the power supply as everything that uses the network works with the exception of the browsers.

Even if the PSU were at fault then it could not cause an issue when it was being disconnected, voltage surges/transients within the PSU and the like are only going to happen when it is connected or turned off at the mains when plugged into the laptop.

If there were a transient causing the issue then that would be due to the regulation within the laptop.

But either way, all of the above wouldn't  explain why TOR, dropbox and the VPN work OK.

Hi, error image attached.

One update though, dropbox doesn't work as I said but the VPN and TOR do.

Cheers

The report is with the system not working.

I've not installed any proxies, only thing I have done network related is is install VPN unlimited.

The problem was present before I started using the VPN.

Below is a log of when the charger is connected and the proxy is not enabled. However, if I look at the proxy setup in the windows control panel, under "manual proxy setup" the setting "Use a proxy server" is turned on. I can turn it off but when I go back to it it is turned back on again. This happens regardless of whether or not  charger is plugged in.

You have to find what is working as proxy...

- make sure the proxy is enable and that you have access to the internet

- download https://live.sysinte...com/Tcpview.exeand save the file on the Desktop

- run tcpview and accept all the prompts

On the Local Address list look for port :8080 see if you can find the name of the program that is replying on that port

Enclosed is a screenshot, there's a lot of ISUSPM.EXE using that port along with a few system processes. If I disconnect the charger they all slowly disappear after turning red. Most of the other non 8080 processes remain.

- download Process Explorer https://live.sysinte...com/procexp.exe save the file on the Desktop
- right click procexp and select Run As Administrator
- on the list of processes locate the ISUSPM with the same PID you find using TCPVIEW
- right click the ISUSPM process and select Properties to check the file path

Maybe the path to the file will provide some insights about the program that is installed.

Hi again, here is a screenshot of the result.

Sadly it doesn't lead to anything useful from what I can see.

I looked at the creation date of the file and checked the dates in the list of installed apps for that time and date, the closest was 7zip.

Still stumped.
